So, time for an update. This has little to do with me, but more with the landlord. There's a few funny and sad stories here, so I thought I'd share them.

1) My ex-landlord scammed another tenant and succeeded
My neighbor, who was very helpful with providing me data from other apartments to prove my landlord's shenanigans with the gas/water/electricity, lost his job due to Covid. After he went through his savings, he wasn't able to pay rent anymore. Luckily, he got a new job and he was able to make a deal with the landlord: he starts paying rent again and he pays €200,- extra per month to get rid of his debt of €1640,-. Now, that should've been the end of it. Unfortunately, the landlord started disagreeing with the height of the debt. According to him, it's around €2850,-. (Probably a coincidence, but this is an increase of €1210,-, almost exactly the amount of money he wants from me). Anyways, my neighbor paid it all before realizing it was way too high of a number. He has since tried to contact them, but they've ignored him every step of the way.

2) My ex-landlord scammed another landlord and failed
The entrance to our, and a bunch of other houses, is through an alleyway. My landlord made it a goal to own every single house connected to that alleyway, so he could build there. Now, there's a very old property there, and the person who owns it refused to sell it to him, as he would give up his rights to that alleyway, which serves as a parking space for bikes for a company he owes.
My landlord had a genius plan to counter this. He called the municipality and bluffed his way through it. He claimed he was the owner of this property. Now, all the changes in ownership of historical properties (like this one) are announced in a paper. The actual owner read there that his property had been taken over. However, he had no idea about this. He visited it and found it was blocked off. His door was taken out and a big wooden plate was nailed in front of where the door was. He was extremely angry, so he visited all the tenants that live near that alleyway, and found out everyone thought it was our landlord's property. He is suing my landlord.

3) My lawyer had some great news
I contacted her and told her I was thinking that my landlord and the debt-collecting agency weren't going to sue me anymore, as it's been 18 days over the deadline for my payment and I haven't heard anything. I also notified my landlord that if he'd sue me, I'd gladly go to court and show how he's committing fraud to a judge. She agreed with me and said that if I wanted to just wait it out, I could do so without any further cost. She's basically given me a freebie.

Hmm, he's a landlord. He already has money. Still, he's scamming people who know his full name. That's pretty dumb of his. Because one day he may scam the wrong person who will beat the shit out of him.

I hope it happens one day. It's really dumb to anger people who can find you and theoretically get revenge on you.

Or maybe he chooses his victims carefully and knows Farah is not a threat to him. However, wealthy people generally have more to lose. I hope he meets someone like me, who has nothing to lose. No mercy.

Haha, thanks. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like my landlord will actually be suing me. It would be a loss for him most likely, and he takes pride of never losing a court case.

Sounds like good news (ish), Farah! Glad you got out of it without having to fork out too much, either to the landlord or the lawyer!

But you can sue him. Show him who's boss. He tried to steal from you. Strike back ten times harder.

God, I really wish he would lose everything for being a garbage of human being and go to gulag. I really, really do.

In moments like this I wish the inquisition returns. There really isn't justice for criminals nowadays

i mean fraud is one of the biggest crimes right? (like after Rape;Murder) So you should sue your landlord just on the basis that he is committing fraud i think the government would really love to hear that.

(there are different types of fraud but I only know one which is tax evasion which seems what he is committing)

@goralgn: Typically, individuals can't sue one another for murder or other crimes. Those charges come from the Crown or State, so Farah would probably have to go to the cops and try to get the authorities to go after Farah's landlord... Seems like a long-shot. For stuff like tax evasion, there might be avenues to report to your national or regional tax collection agencies.

Also, friendly reminder to only use respectful language in this thread!

As someone who also lives in the netherlands and has had his fair share of bureaucratic bullsh** this story is greatly amusing to me as well xD
If there's anything that the dutch like it's their money and tax evasion/fraud is a very serious thing especially in the housing market since there's almost nothing available there.

From personal experience i can say 1. be polite in all interactions especially written, better yet you could do a phone call and state you'll record the call for legal reasons just to see their reaction (and confirmation that you have their permission then ask varied questions about the official information you can ask both the landlord and administration for statements and have an official instance follow up on this to see if it's the same).
2. Anything on paper (or online in mail) written statements are gold, just make logs of it or screenshots of things and stack them somewhere to make a case, anyone who isn't truthful especially in situations like these tend to make A LOT of mistakes dragging themselves deeper into the sh**. 3. Involve official instances (like your lawyer) they will probably love a case like this if you have sufficient paperwork and evidence and can roast the landlord as well as hire/assign official impartial 3rd party instances to confirm things (for example the meters, if he were to mess with the meter it would be even worse than lying about it)

As someone who successfully handled 3 cases in different context/type against official instances i can confirm that it's extremely annoying and time consuming but in the end definitely worth it when you're consistent with logs xD (I'm just a student but scientific writing with official mails while being polite people often mistake me for being gullible lol)
Good luck! will be checking this forum for more updates xD
