Best histories should be a tie between Italy, Persia, China, Germany and Russia or perhaps Egypt or even south Africa, possibly Brazil. That's all tied for the 5th place.

Bonjour!

I can't help it. I will feed the controversy!

Appolo you need to work your Napoleonic wars :) And the others : Go back to school!!!

If epic means war...

"According to historian Niall Ferguson, of the 125 major European wars fought since 1495, the French have participated in fifty – more than both Austria (forty-seven) and England (forty-three). And they’ve achieved an impressive batting average: out of 168 battles fought since 387 BC, they have won 109, lost forty-nine and drawn ten. [...] "

I'm too lazy. I let you read:

And not to say Niall Ferguson is British!

"the language of warfare is written in one language: French."

Bye bye :)

this whole poll is useless, as people from their own country would vote for theirs, and as 'Muricans are like half of the warlighters, the whole thing is wrong. Shall I remind you that we are rating the country/nation with the most epic history (your poll is also incomplete), USA with barely 250 years of history is clearly not the first ranked nation here.

My first choice would be China, 3000 years of history and badass battles, as well as Egypt, Persia or Greece, about India it is more complicated as it was not really a nation until modern times.

Believe it or not I actually voted for Italy, despite my comments on the UK. Top three on my watch.

1. Italy: "Ancient Rome created what we now call "Western society" -- including our laws, our culture and our religion. After Rome fell and Europe spent 1,000 years in darkness, Italy reclaimed it with the Renaissance. To create a civilization is achievement enough -- but to save it 10 centuries later is truly remarkable" Without Italy, what would have we been?

2. UK: "The dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, the United Kingdom is often credited with being the nation that "created the modern world", by playing a leading role in developing Western ideas of property, capitalism, and parliamentary democracy as well as making significant contributions to literature, the arts, and science and technology. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-quarter of the Earth's surface and encompassed a third of its population".

3. Greece: "Regarded as the cradle of western civilization and being the birthplace of modern democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western Literature, Political Science and drama, including both tragedy and comedy, Greece has a very long and remarkably rich history during which its culture has proven to be especially influential in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East"

1. US colonized by Spain, England, and France.
2. US defeats France (French and Indian War, which was, at least in the USA part of it, mostly fought and one by Americans) England 1775-1783, and Spain (1819 in Florida, and 1899 completely destroying and taking Spain's colonies)
3. US accepts colonists from everywhere
4. US then pretty much turns the tide in WW1 (Germany was weak before we came, but they were almost in Paris, and could've won) and WW2 (admit it, without our intervention, Japs wouldve crushed asia and Germany came very close in europe).
5. US then builds nukes, and uses them, making missils the weapons of the future.
6. US = awesome.

1. Not US, but the AMERICAN continent.
2. US did not even existed, England and allied indians defeated France and its Indians allies. US then gained its independence because mainly France helped them, if not it would have taken 20 more years to America to gain its independence. So thanks Lafayette for that.
3. ???
4. WW1 America started the war in 1917 when the war was already almost over, France and UK were holding the battlefront for 3 years, and yes Germans were not far from Paris, but in 1914 during the first battle of the Marne, a French and British counterattack expelled them far away (you better learn some history before commenting).
5. yes? and so did many other nations.
6. ahahah no comment.

1. Not US, buy the AMERICAN continent.

France colonized Louisiana, spain florida, england the thriteen colonies... several other european natiosn held colonies int he states at one time or another.

US Colonists existed then. And much of englands initial fighting was stupid. it took several years more than it shouldve for them to beat france in the US, due to bade tactics.

France joined the war because they believed the US could win.

4. WW1 America started the war in 1917 when the war was already almost over, France and UK were holding the battlefront for 3 years, and yes Germans were not far from Paris, but in 1914 during the firs battle of the Marne, but a French and British counterattack expelled them far away (you better learn some history before commenting).

Theres no evidence that Britain and France could've pulled off the same counterattack.

And beyond that, US loaned europe 10 billion, then forgave the debt (10 bil bakc then was a lot more than today)

Also- Germany and france would've starved if we hadnt sent food over.

and i notice you have nothing to say about WW2 :)

5. yes? and so did many other nations.

we were first.

plus, russia based theres off of german technology... which we couldve (and should've) stopped them from taking.

The Mongols built their colossal empire much faster than the Americans.

1. Also by the Netherlands, Sweden. "Colonised by England" Great Britain, thank you very much.

2. When USA defeated France, you make a complete lie saying that it was "mostly fought and (incorrect spelling) one by the Americans". Britain defeated France, as part of the Seven Years War. When they defeated UK, they had a lot of support from France. Gaining Florida was to do with a confusing treaty, in the aftermath of the Seven Years War. America gaining "completely destroying and taking Spain's colonies"... They defeated MEXICO. Not Spain. Two ENTIRELY different countries.

3. This point makes absolutely no sense.

4. WW1: The Entente would have won anyway. With the Ottoman Empire being heavily defeated, the ethnic breakup of Austria-Hungary, and the sheer weakness of Bulgaria, Germany would be the only Central Power left, and would either A) Realise that they cannot win, or B) Continue fighting, and lose.
WW2: Operation Barbarossa was a stupid move from Germany. This proves that they have learned nothing from Napoleon. If you attack Russia (by this point USSR), and you don't beat the country by winter, you will simply be defeated. NOBODY survives Russian winters (Except the Mongols). The USSR's strength would be enough to take down Germany, and with the help of Britain, and the Free French, they would have almost definitely still won World War Two. Note that nuking Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not the most important factors that made Japan surrender, it was USSR breaking their Non Aggression Pact. This would very likely still happen in the alternate timeline, where USA doesn't join World War Two, and Japan would be defeated as well. The several other Axis Powers (Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, even Italy, etc.) would easily be defeated, because they wouldn't have a strong enough military, or they simply had bad leaders... *Looks at pictures of Mussolini*.

5. Wow... USA has nukes!? AMAZING! So does France, UK, Russia, China, Pakistan, India, maybe Israel, and maybe North Korea (hard to tell what North Korea are up to).

6. No justification or evidence, no rebuttal deserved, or needed.

Oh, and by the way. I voted for Persia.

EDIT: Checked the poll stats... 1% for Turkey, and 0% for Arabia? Seriously? These countries have some incredibly interesting histories. Does nobody else find the Islamic Caliphates, the Seljuk & Ottoman Turks interesting? These countries are heavily underrated.
