Speaking as a Brit, you're pretty much right there. Although over here we like to joke that the 4th of July was the day that we decided we'd rather keep India. :D

Joking (and my previous post) aside, the majority of people the world over refer to the inhabitants of the United States as Americans. After all, Brits aren't known as the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelands". We're known as "Brits", or to the people who don't know the difference between the UK and England, they call us all English.

I assume that the majority of people on the ladder leaderboards are Europeans because they have more free time, or are generally more interested in competing on the ladders.

I doubt europeans as a whole have that much more free time that there's that little ammount of americans well rated on the ladders.

I think americans represent almost half of the site's traffic (last time I saw a post about it, they were a little under 50%). And yet they're not nearly as close to the other 50% top-players wise.


Warlight is a game that recquires some intelligence, and I've found that there's a lot of smart ppl here, even though the forums don't represent it very well ;)

Warlight players also tend to be young, most just started to work, or are in college or even less. Maybe the skill "gap" can be explained by their education. In a top level, math, understanding of the game and deep thinking is recquired to beat your opponent.

And the american education, at least for public schools, is very bad while public schools in Europe are significantly better than their american counter-parts.

Considering that almost 90% of americans attend to public schools, there's a smaller ammount of americans as a percentage of the population than europeans that can archieve a good student level, where a person is able to analyze situations, understand complex systems and do some math, all of which are required to be a top player in warlight.

This is a regional thing. It's semantics. Europeans refer to N. America + S. America as 'America'. North Americans don't really do this.

As far as Americans naming themselves after the continent, they really don't. The country is called the United States of America. They name themselves after the country. It's no different from citizens of the Republic of Blank calling themselves Blankers/Blankicans/Blankians.

I doubt academia has any effect on WL skill. Only basic math is required. I think the greatest skills are spacial reasoning, know the best positions and how they could change, and psychology, estimating what moves your opponent will make.

These skills aren't taught in school, they are learned through experience playing the game or known through a natural inclination.

The education systems should have no effect.

One theory is that people of similar origin network. Your skillful German is likely to teach or communicate with other Germans. So if you get a few Europeans on the top 10, through greater communication, Europeans end up being more successful. However I doubt this accounts for the full scenario.

Random chance is also a factor, I imagine with any game there's a random chance all the top players will belong to X. It's a fluke.
