@5S If I could perhaps make a suggestion - I've noticed a few times that you have very limited coverage of some events, compared to your very extensive coverage of CW. Obviously I think that aligns with your interests and involvement more, so that makes sense, and also to cover every event in the same detail would require a ton of time and effort that you probably don't have.

However, would it be possible to find someone(s) to be the newsletter 'correspondent' for a particular event, and they write that little segment for you?

You can take it or leave it, this is your newsletter and everyone will be grateful for whatever content you put out! I also understand that organising people to do that would be a bit of a pain, but I guess if you get any volunteers, that would be sweet!

Every post of the newsletter since the very beginning has either an indirect or straight up explicit call to action for people to contribute to the newsletter by writing about the events, that they find interesting, or to add info to events, that I don't feel completely informed about.

I am open to any contributions as well as to give them explicit support.

Man, what an end to that season, right? We scrapped by with 3 wins, and such an ugly way to do it. If this competition continues in this direction it is very bad maybe

Congrats to the guys at Kynte club for holding a top 5 spot, you’ll get em next time 101st!

Great!

Probably I will post the next newsletter this weekend.
For the mentioned intersecting topics, I might be covering the drama in Nations Cup, though I would really like if there were a contribution of either additional coverage about the actual games/competition or a full coverage (including drama).
The World Tour is not usually covered by me, so there is little intersection.

As for the procedure, it may either a synced post around the newsletter. Or if you want me to post the texts in the main post + the external feed, please send me a notice about that.

Warzone Newsletter #12

A recap of interesting stuff of 2st half of October 2023.

Clan Wars Season 38 ended – Myth Busters won, yet not without a fight

This was another season, when Optimum made a push to dethrone Myth Busters from their CW wining streak. And again, just as in the previous season, Optimum had a small yet stable lead for the first half of the season.

The odds turned in favor of Myth Busters on the 15th day of the season, when they had an impressive 31 wins in one day, against Optimum’s 19 wins. Since then, Myth Busters generally had the lead, which lasted till the very end of the season.

Congratulations Myth Busters! A deserved win. While Optimum showed that they can rival MB bot in participation and win rates, Myth Busters had a slight advantage both in total win rate (67% vs 65%) and the particular win rate against Optimum (52%).

Unfortunately, Optimum faced another (new for me) bug/feature in the Clan Wars. It turns out that if a clan gets all of its wins for a territory from 2v2 games (thus having an even amount of wins) and a territory requires an odd amount of wins (which it usually does), then 1 win is effectively lost. That win is added to the already won territory, instead of getting carried over to the next one. This was confirmed by Fizzer to be a bug, yet he refused to correct the count, when Optimum approached him. This bug didnt really affect the final rankings and due to little data, we don’t know for sure, how that would affect the rankings in case of various tie-breakers.

Another big surprise of the season, is that knyte club managed to get top-5, displacing {101st}. Congratulations! The CW team of KC seems to be ambitious about Clan Wars recently. Even for the very last slot of the season, when everything could have changed (there was just 2 win lead between clans) and I genuinely anticipated a standoff between two stacks of {101st} and knyte club, there was only the stack of knyte club. That really shows their dedication.

This is even more interesting, considering the history the clans: current {101st} gifted knyte club as an uncapped clan to Mothership, when transferring to {101st} in pursuit of leveraging the community and assets of Python/{101st}. And now they are beaten by the former Mothership. Are {101st} already switched from CW to Clan League mode? Will they retake their top-5 position in season 39?

Besides that, there was little change in the standings. Congratulations to the top-9 CW club!

Nation’s Cup – final round incoming, drama and big changes

4-th round is over. 5th round is coming soon, which is going to be the final round for most of the teams. If after round 5 the best team is leading by only 0,5 points or fewer, the 6th round will happen, but only for teams still fighting for the championship. For everyone else, round 5 is the final one.

LND from The Last Alliance has volunteered to cover the competitive side of the Nation’s Cup. Thanks to him, we have the following coverage:

LND here to cover the competition side of Nations Cup!

The competition is nearing its final stages, with Round 4 (1v1 Laketown) nearly complete and the match-ups for Round 5 (2v2 Volcano Island) due to be made in the stream very soon!
Going into Round 5, we have one team on the maximum 4 points, GB A! GB A has certainly been the strongest team this tournament, beating SUI (7-5), NL (10-2), US A (7-5) and ANZ A (9-2, 1 remaining) to grab their four points with a 70% game WR. This is no mean feat, considering the strength of their opponents!

Their opponent for Round 5 will most likely be GER A, who are currently on 3 confirmed points, but due to their match with HEL A being tied with two games left, they currently have 4 points for matchmaking purposes. GER A has been a bit shakier (59% game WR) with perhaps slightly easier opponents, NL (8-4), FR B (7-5), US B (7-5) and a yet undecided match against HEL A (5-5, 2 remaining); the latter two matchups were both come-from behind efforts from GER A. However, since HEL A are dropping out of the competition, it looks like GB A vs GER A could be our final, and with the controversial introduction of Beep Beep I’m a Jeep into the squad in place of Roi Joleil, GER A will definitely be in their strongest form so far this tournament!

There is, however, a chance that a third contender could challenge for the title.
FR A is currently on 3.5 points, after very convincingly defeating HEL B (12-0), CZE (11-1) and HIS (11-1). A Round 2 draw against US A (6-6) was the only setback in an otherwise dominant campaign that has them on top of the table by game WR at 83%.

There are two situations in which Nations Cup could end after Round 5. Firstly, if GER A loses to HEL A before the matchups are created, FR A would face GB A in Round 5, with the winner getting 1.5 points and becoming the undisputed champion of NC. Secondly, if the GB A and GER A match goes ahead as predicted, and FR A loses their match, then the winner of the GB A vs GER A match will take the title.

However, there are several options for a 6th round to become necessary – if FR A wins a match that is not against GB A this round, then they will be minimum 0.5 points behind GB A, and maximum 0.5 points ahead of GB A – this means a 6th round must be played to determine the champion.
Likewise, if the likely GB A vs GER A match is a draw, then we have Round 6.

Personally, I think a 6th round will be necessary – it seems unlikely GER A will lose or draw to HEL A before the matches are created, making the GB A vs GER A matchup most likely. In this case, FR A is most definitely the favourite to win any of their possible matches against either ANZ A, CAN, US B or EAS, which would require the French to play a final against the Germans or the British. This would certainly be an exciting outcome!

As far as individual performances go, currently there remain just 5 players who are undefeated in all 4 rounds. Phaeril (FR A), Mathematician (EAS), and Chackyjo (GER C) are sitting on 8-0, while Forsaken (HEL A) and ACL Tears (US B) are currently at 7-0 (one remaining game each). Should Phaeril keep up his form into the final round(s), I believe he would be a deserving Player of the Tournament winner, having showed his strength against tougher teams than his other undefeated peers!

Up to now, a clear difference can be seen between teams with some good players and some not-so-good players as opposed to the teams with all-round good players, due to the 1v1 nature of the games. However, it will be interesting to see if the 2v2 format obscures these differences a bit. Team games offer teams the possibility of having a very skilful player ‘puppet’, the not-so-skilful player. This could potentially have the effect of seemingly increasing the team’s overall skill level, and making it harder for teams with good depth to get easy wins against the weaker players on the opposition.

However, the teams of two will be randomly generated for each match – as such, teams with less skill depth will have to hope that their weak players are paired with their strong ones, while their opponents will hope for the opposite. To what extent this will affect the match results will be interesting to see!

Another interesting factor in Round 5 will be the fact that there will only be 6 games per match, not 12 as in the previous rounds. Each player will still play 2 games each, but because these are in teams there will be half the number of games. I believe this will make draws even more likely, and make separating evenly matched teams harder.

That’s all for now, make sure to join/watch the Round 5 matchmaking livestream on October, 6 at 7:30pm UTC, https://www.twitch.tv/min34, or join the Nation’s Cup Discord server https://discord.gg/kTS6auccz to stay up to date with live results!

...Part 2

Thanks LND, 5S here again to cover the Nation’s Cup drama. While the competition progresses, we have witnessed some big drama events. That’s the recap:

- Background: It looks like, that since the start of the event, there have been a few minor inconveniences in the organization such as:
-- realization of that there is an odd number of competing teams for match ups
-- changes of rules on what to do with the games, which fail to end before the next round is scheduled to start
-- sudden introduction of a 2v2 template to an originally 1v1 competition

- 2023-10-21 – The event organizing player Marcus Aurelius announces a new rule, that every team has a right to sub in one player from outside their original roster

- 2023-10-24 – After a heated debate about the rule, team Germany+Denmark A is allowed to make a sub according to the rule, which was announced earlier. From what I understand, there was an opinion, that the whole new rule was introduced just to allow that one sub to happen.

- 2023-10-2X – Team Hellas A (“Greek” team) want to make a sub too. They want to sub in Rufus. That sub is denied by the organizer with the reasoning that this is “named” to be a “Greek” team, and Rufus is from Lithuania. The Hellas A arguments reside on the idea, that the naming should not be an issue, there are multiple teams named after multiple countries (yet, bordering each other) and one team “Hispanics” effectively has players from really different countries. The sub is still denied after some debates.

- 2023-10-26 – Team Hellas A quits the Nation Cup, being disappointed with those constant rule changes.

- 2023-10-26 – Player alexclusive creates a thread on Warzone forums about “How to improve Nations Cup?”. While this thread has no direct relation to the drama events, I think it is important to note both its creation and the timings.

- 2023-10-30 – The event organizing player Marcus Aurelius announces that he resigns from organizing the Nation Cup, and player Rento (who was 2nd in command) will be managing the final round.

This is basically it. I think that the drama might have been avoided just by calm reasoning, explanation of the motives, and in the worst case some community counsel for controverting decisions. I would like to also note the IMHO high overall level of toxicity in those discords by “Warlight old timers”, which is maintained by all sides of discussion. This kind of online communication looks like to just really enhance the unnecessary drama.

BO11’s – one was aborted, new two are announced!

The best of 11 between players Tac(ky)tical and alexclusive has been aborted.

The series started as usual. First game was completed. The second game started, but Tac(ky)tical got booted on turn 2. When the third game was created, Tac(ky)tical didn’t join it for 6 days with little communication to alexclusive or the public. After the 6 days passed, alexclusive deleted the game (the 6 day of non join was a big technical violation, as the participants agreed to play in MTL’s rules which gave only 3 days to join a game) and aborted the BO11.

There is little known about what happened exactly. Seems like either a lack of interest or smth. There has been no official statement by Tac(ky)tical, but during his streams he said (I might be interpreting his words wrong though), that there was too much pressure and notifications from alexclusive about joining the game and that “respect goes both ways”.

Yet, now we have 2 (two) new Best-of-11 started!
- Rufus vs alexclusive with some really hilarious wagers
- Rakleader vs Forsaken

What I really like here is that both events announced that they would have dedicated streams and event coverage available to the public. I think that this might be really entertaining to follow. Games by strong players are cool, but community (especially the more casual part of it) would really benefit from additional content. My recommendation is to tune in 😀

Warzone Newsletter #13

A recap of interesting stuff of November 2023.

Clan Wars Season 39 ended

This CW season Optimum decided not to push for Top-1 and dropped to 4th rank. 1st rank was easily taken by Myth Busters, and Prime reclaimed the top-2 position.

101st and knyte club had a toe-to-toe competition for top-5 position through the whole season, and 101st succeeded.

There was some competition for the top-9 spot between M'Hunters and Ving, yet no news here - M'Hunters secured their spot in the coin zone.

In the already started season 40 of Clan Wars Optimum seems to be resting again, and are on the verge of falling out of top-5 range. The main intrigue will be about who is getting the top-9 spot: the position of M'Hunters is really contested by clans Ving and After Dark.

Eternity's Road to Harmony

This is a big story about one of the major clans in Warzone with lots of twists, which recently spilled over to global chat.

The events revolve around player Eternity, one of clan Harmony's managers, who was responsible for the majority of Harmony's recent recruitment (looks like he was in charge of the summer recruitment drive, which was covered previously in this newsletter #9). We might also know him from him exposing the NONO's alt network. (covered in the newsletter #9 either)

Here is the recap of events:

- 2023.10.10 - An old inactive clan The Hodopian Dynasty (THD) is being revived. The logo, icon and description get updated, and the clan is opened to the open clan page. The Hodopian Dynasty is one of the previous clans (or even the original clan) of current clan Harmony's community. The clan is revived by player Mahatma Gandhi#6, who is an alt of a well known Harmony's manager named Eternity. While the Gandhi-Eternity connection is not publicly disclosed, the new clan states its close connection to Harmony, to the old community of clan Two Steps From Hell and to a lesser extent to The Last Alliance. The goal of the THD is to compete in Clan Wars.

- 2023.10.XX - Something happens. It is not clear what exactly, but from public communications of two sides (Eternity and Harmony's management team) it is claimed that:
-- Eternity has abused his manager's rights when interacting with a clan member. He later admitted, that such a behavior was a mistake.
-- There was some (heated?) disagreement about the optimal number of internal tournaments, which ended in some players being stuck in Round Robins with 50+ simultaneous games.
-- All 9 other managers of Harmony voted for removal of Eternity's manager's rights (This claim was disputed by Eternity)

- 2023.10.28 - Eternity's manager rights in clan Harmony are removed. He changes his name from "Eternity" to "Harmony", either as a way to show his dedication to the clan, or as a protest against removal of his manager's rights. (For clear differentiation between the player and the clan, I will further refer to the player as Eternity).

- 2023.11.08 - Eternity leaves or is removed from Harmony. It seems that the initial plan was to give Eternity a couple of weeks cooling-off period and later to reinstate him as a clan member, but it failed. Eternity's alt is removed from The Hodopian Dynasty.

- 2023.11.09 - Eternity tries to communicate with Harmony's clan members by starting a few (~10) multiplayer games, where he invites Harmony's members and uses the game chat for communication. He states, that while he has been removed from Harmony, his goal is to strengthen Harmony, and basically he will continue to execute his former manager's responsibilities, even being outside the clan.

- 2023.11.11 - It is rumored that Eternity will be joining clan Blitz as a recruiter. There are talks bout this in the Blitz's discord, and a screenshot with a welcoming PM is shared in the Nation's Cup discord. However, I have no traces that Eternity has ever joined Blitz: either he never did (the screenshot might be fake), or he joined and left within just a few hours.

- 2023.11.2X - Eternity becomes quite active in global chat. He confirms his dedication to help Harmony, namely in recruiting, Clan Wars guidance and Clan League training. I have seen at least one event of Eternity successfully recruiting a player to join Harmony in global chat. Eternity participates in raffles, and it seems like he really aims to having at least 999 coins.

- 2023.11.28 - A massive transfer of THD remaining members to Harmony is initiated. From this point in time, THD becomes inactive again.

- 2023.11.30 - Eternity creates clan "Road to Harmony". The purpose of the clan is to recruit players for Harmony and eventually a total merger back into Harmony. The clan's forum has actually a good, neutral overview of the past events.

While I was preparing this episode of the newsletter, clan Harmony kindly shared their official statement on the situation to be included in the newsletter. Here it is:

Eternity committed an infraction in clan chat. He was talking politics, when the player asked to stop the conversation, Eternity muted them to prove a point. Eternity wrote a rule, you should only mute people rarely and really only to stop a fight. Over the course of a couple of weeks the other managers tried explaining to Eternity why his actions were wrong with little success. After much deliberation, it was deemed appropriate to give Eternity a minor punishment, one month removal from management. Eternity did not appear to take it well, changed his name to Harmony and started creating many clan tournaments, 33 in 36 hours. He was asked again by a number of managers, including myself, to stop. He refused and issued vague threats about his taking action when he returned to management. Harmony managers decided (once more after much deliberation and communication) that it would be best for Eternity and Harmony to part ways, he was removed from the clan and THD.

Eternity continues to create what look like official tournaments, they are not and act as if he's still a recruiter for Harmony, he is not.

old yeller,
Harmony manager

Thanks to clan Harmony's management for releasing their official position.

That is basically it. The story still unveils as the clan Road to Harmony is gaining traction. Yet now you know what it is all about.

What makes a template 'strategic'?

The hottest forum topic of November with ~400 posts.

The initial question was raised from the discussions of the Clan League 17 templates, when not everybody was 100% approving the strategic value of the selected templates.

TL;DR of the thread: A bunch of Warzone elitists try to define the word "strategic" and discuss, whether Airlift card is strategic enough.

My take on this, is that "strategic" doesn't mean "interesting". And people should be aiming to make templates which are interesting to play, disregarding how "strategic" those are.

The thread might be interesting for people, who are into such kind of stuff.

- A massive 16k coin free entry tourney to promote the template Tarabonia's Choice is hosted by Rufus and GiantFrog
