Can I just honestly say something?

I dont think Warlight will ever die. Idk if someone else has said this already or not but this game will probably always stay a cult game. It has a potential to hit mainstream games but it also has its small drawbacks in term of audience generation. People who like games and especially strategy games arent that many so how exactly do you target them?

Answer : Maybe you can try advertising it everywhere like Travian does or like some random Chinese mobile game does.
It will attract a huge amount of players, what would they do?

1. Play the game; May or May not like the game.
This solely depends on the personal taste of individuals. If they like it, they will stay.
If they stay, retention depends on their personal reasons for staying cause everyone has lives.

2. Not play the game. The End.

Hmm Goodness me, that is a good observation goodgame.

• A) It will never be a mainstream game. Name one possibly a pure strategy game aside of classical board-games (Chess, Go), that could be regarded mainstream game
  
• B) There is a reason why Travian or other freemium-strategy games advertise and target certain sites/banners, because certain people tend to look/click on them. Do you really want Travian players here? If, then soon you can buy armies and extra turn-time with coins. The best I have heard is a lot of players here have played Tribal Wars at some point of their gaming experience. This could be a source of decent new player-base
  
• C) Travian is not strategy, its freemium. Even if Chess would be advertised in ways like Travian, it would never yield that success that Travian shares. Pure strategy is not nearly as popular as freemium fake strategies

Advertisement, marketing, targeting is not bad idea. Its mostly costly and the whole strategy-gaming sector is fraud. Try googling (preferably DuckDuckGo) "strategy games", "pure-strategy games", "strategy board games" and see what comes up, or even better, count which actually can be regarded real strategy. Or if you look turn-based games, the kinda have bad name for being boring, cheap and half of them are bad copies of card games like Magic: The Gathering.

Warlight player-base has been quite constant, at least from a perspective of new accounts created monthly/yearly for few past years. Warlight is not growing, but its not certainly dying. Although it could be slowing down, decreasing in certain parts - at least Seasonal Ladder has caught my eye. Hard to get over 200 players there now.

Well your basically saying the person who came up with the idea of this game shouldnt buy a Yatch if he can lol. Whats wrong with people with money wanting to spend some on this website? It might pay for their bandwidth too, maybe more part time jobs for moderators? Mate possibilities are endless. What if warlight becomes just like travian and kicks off? Whats wrong with that? Is it a bad thing there would be more revenue coming into warlight? Would that not help improve the mobile app and the game alltogether? What are you trying to say really? Im confused, Sorry.

And btw just cos you're aware of Duckduckgo doesnt mean everyone else is too. Im 99% sure more than 9/10th of the world probably doesnt even know what duck duck go is.

I mean you cant pay for more than membership or coins? If anything it will probably raise profile for the coin games if people with money take interest in this game and want to pay? How does getting more paying members affect the gameplay? More than 90+ posts now btw.

Wanna buy an extra army? Only 100 coins per army! Do you want to have an extra pick? 500 coins! Make your commander worth 11 armies? 900 coins!

Let's hope it never gets to that.

@Mr T. Unfortunately Tribal Wars (which I played for years) has now gone that way too (pay to win). Some other TW players migrated their way over to Warzone too. I sincerely hope Warzone never goes pay to win.
