A 1v1 Ladder game: Analysis: 3/19/2019 11:58:53

Morning all,

I finished a ladder game a week or so ago which (amazingly) I won. I know damn well it wasn't due to any special talent on my part, and I wasn't against the smartest of opponents (no offence intended if he reads this, but attacking a 4 with a 4 wasn't very clever), but I think it'd be nice if we had a little chat about the match.

I'm open to criticism and any other comments about the way I or my opponent played. Hopefully, this should help both myself and others of a similar skill (if you can call it that) to improve.

I think your play could be optimized.

Don’t do 1v2 followed by 2v1 attacks on netral, you waste an army. If you did 3v2, you’d have 1 reminder. 1v2 then 2v1 gives 0 reminders.

Attack neutral every turn. Don’t completely stop expanding.

You won because of your opponent triple picked and you had a spot nearby.

A regular mistake of mine. Thanks for pointing that out. ;)

I'd never completely thought of the 1v2 then 2v1 thing. I occasionally use it to create an extra order delay but for the most part it's sheer stupidity that compels me to do it. 😆

Some useful pointers, thanks guys. :)

That's not a good advice. In brawly scenarios, this can lose you the game. Those scenarios are rare though.

However, Dan still has a point. Normally, you should always take a neutral, but always ask yourself "Could I use those armies in the direct fight with my opponent instead? Do these armies make a difference in what I have planned?"

Take Japan if your opponent is in East Russia; getting multiple borders is easy way to break a bonus.

I would even say an opposite: focus on your enemy, not neutrals.

It's all about balancing expansion versus fighting. And while you do that, make a stupid predict.

Thanks again guys.

Yeah, I often seem to make the mistake of not expanding when I should, and expanding when I should be throwing my income at the opponent.

You focus too much on defending East China, rather than breaking Eastern Russia. If you both break each other, you gain an army advatage on him, as well as positional advantage.

Breaking bonuses is often more important than keeping them, there being a few exceptions of course.

about doing 6 picks.

Number of Players x Number of Territories you start with = Number of picks you should do.

(i know you could also just say "do as many picks until the game doesnt allow you to do more" but then people may not understand why the game sometimes allow you to make only 6 picks and other times 12)
