I personally try to say 'gg' if I win or lose. It's about being nice. Gracious in victory , noble in defeat. If the game was NOT a 'gg' it is usually not on a ladder game, but some random distro random team RT game, in which case I may have been known to explain in carefully select phrases (like, "WTH is wrong with you? You kept sending 1 attacks against 1 neutrals you useless piece of shitake mushrooms.") instead of saying 'gg'.

It's weird, because I feel bad if my opponent says gg and I don't respond. But at the same time, in the more common case that I've lost, I don't want to seem like a sore loser. In general, I don't like when people say "gg", forcing me to open the game to read the chat, but if everyone lived by my rules for myself, there would be 2 "gg"s every game.
Also if something surprised me or if I want to make excuses for losing I'll say something like "I didn't think you'd pick (territory). Anyway, gg". That way my opponent has more to read than just "gg".

After sports games in junior high / high school, we all had to line up and then walk along the other team's line of players, slapping every hand and saying "good game" for every player. "goodgamegoodgamegoodgamegoodgamegoodgamegoodgame...." Typing "gg" is nothing. :) And as others said, I always wanna open a completed game and review it anyway.
Edit: However, I don't usually say "gg" when I win, unless the losing player says it first. Otherwise I don't know, feels like rubbing it in or something. I might still say it if the game was particularly close or interesting, though, or if I know the person.

When i think the game was especially good or fun i express this differently than gg. When i lose i always say gg unless i think it was a really awful game. When i win just like many above i usually wait for my opponent to say it first except i know the guy.

I don't mind "gg". I see it as an example of good sportsmanship. Now and again a rival player will offer a complement, which is always nice. The following comments were directed at me during two recent games.
I hate you, good strategy.
Fuck this I'm done. No fucking way you deployed 10 on turn fucking one, and keep pumping them (out) like that.
The second comment was prompted by my opening position, during a 4 player FFA.

You probably right @Norman I will try to use it more in future, often I just use 'bye' or 'have a nice day' or in a couple of games I get a little bit rude because I am not a really good loser, I shouldn't do that in future too, after all it is just a game :)

From post above...."Politeness is for civilization what onions for burgers are." Ronal McDonald, 1953
A little onion is fine, but to much is just upsetting and can make some ppl cry! gg can be annoying, I have noticed that is doesn't seem to be said quite as much anymore. maybe about 30% less and dropping. when it is a good game its fine, but when its a 3v3 and someone got booted or you had horrible starts from the beginning its just annoying.
