Hello All!

I just joined this game yesterday and I must say that I am very amazed at how warlight works. Great idea and game play. I love it!

I joined an 1v1 Real Time Auto Game and saw there was some fancy icon next to my opponents name. At first I thought it was because he was a member but when I asked him about it he said he was in a clan.

SO I was wondering, how do I join a a clan and does anyone have any recommendations for any clans.

Thank you for all your help

AOE will definetely like you. You should ask someone to get in. Try Apollo?

Before we rush to recommend clans, its worth noting that there are many different kinds of clans. Before we can give you better recommendations it would be best of you told us what you are looking for from a clan. A social group? A bunch of players from your country? People who can be sparring partners and teachers? People to do diplomacy (role playing) games? Fellow Trolls?

These are not mutually exclusive but we do need to know what your priorities are first.

I do enjoy playing some diplomacy games, however I prefer more of strategic game play,

@Zephyrum

Is AOE a good clan for strategy? Are they a fun group?

I wouldn't say we are the best at strategy but I can say the few of us that are active are enjoyable people especially Apollo

We are slowly developing a strategic group but I will admit that there is other RP Clans who are far more ahead in strategy. However though I would say it be a AOE would be a good start

If your focus is on groups that can help you learn more strategic play, then there are a number of viable candidates.

I would never suggest joining a clan that does not have some players with high rankings on the ladders (most ranked 1-100 on 1v1 ladder can give you a fair amount of useful advice, starting out), or that have a lot of members. If they lack the former then you can't be sure that you will get very good advice, period. If they have a lot of members, then you should think carefully before you join, maybe ask around to see what people genuinely think of them, and be biased to listen to better players. They tend to be more mature and knowledgable. Likewise, clans with only a few members, are usually a tad unreliable, even if active.

Anyone who recommends/mentions a single clan, well, I would be wary of them. They may not know that much about other clans at all, or might not have the same interests to say the least.

You can see the full list of clans here:
https://www.warlight.net/Clans/List

(going from the top for the most part - My focus is on clans that can teach strategically, since that seems more important to you if you build a network of friends you can still have decent roleplay games. I am skipping anyone who is not to my knowledge a clan that would be good for teaching newer players. This includes skipping trolls, elites, non-standouts, and other clans that AFAIK are not organized for a purpose you would be looking for)

************

Edit: Corp has been quietly working on improving their strategical focus despite their reputation. As a clan they are not top tier yet but it appears many lesser knowns are gunning for the top. Definitely worth a shot.

M'Hunters would be not bad though I think they have a minimum skill level required. The guide they linked at the top of their page is pretty helpful though :3

Hydra is also pretty decent for teaching newer players. In Hydra you do need to be a bit proactive about learning - usually if you want to learn from somebody you make a game with them. I'm somewhat obligated to toot our horn here given my membership but there are alternatives for sure.

One! has some good players, I don't know all of them, so they might or might not be open to teaching newbies. You would need to ask.

101st is also a teaching clan afaik. I don't know much about their inner works but from what I'e heard they are linked to the elite clan Lynx.

ACME Co is also a teaching clan from the looks of their clan page. ACL Tears is a good player for certain, I don't know very many others though.

[BR Fudew] is another teaching clan. I don't know of any elites in the clan but they seem reasonably friendly.

New World Order same as above but not Brazilian. :p

AOE ^ same as above but more RP focused afaik.

*********

In my honest opinion, Hydra and M'Hunters are your best shots for teaching strategical play though you might need to practice a bit first before applying for the latter.

Now, you don't HAVE to go to a clan to learn from other players but it helps a lot. Try to read some early bit of https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NyhCpIQKShAbWGXicO_ph9whV_UyMS-3a7_re0C7R8Y/edit#heading=h.g1s8mzy7wor0

or GG's strategy guide as well - https://www.warlight.net/Forum/34678-gg-warlight-strategy-guide

Once you have an idea of what you are doing with the basics, and are getting a decent win rate on auto games, I've heard that some higher ranked ladder players are willing to play games with others and teach them a little afterwards. (You seem to be a nice guy, I might be able to help you out a little too)

are there some people i should be careful of?

Quick list:
Anyone who says (and just some clans to avoid joining)

  • waco inc- troll clan
  • darklords- huge clan, probably no help to you at all
  • Icelandic Turtles- way too skilled, probably not into teaching
  • MASTER Clan- ditto
  • Warlight Staff- are you WL staff?

Only a quick list of some clans off the top of my head. There are probably more things out there. I hope this helps you a little bit, though. And to answer the question of if everyone here is nice: no

NP, you are a nice guy so far so I don't mind much at all ;)

This place is a little wierd, its quite polarized really. On the one hand there are a lot of people who are pretty nice and willing to help others, etc. to varying degrees.

There are a few normal people. Not sure where, but they are here somewhere.

Then there are the trolls, and arrogant jerks who typically lack understanding of the game and don't know it. These guys are pretty common in open seat team games, sadly, making it much harder for any decent player who wants to improve, or wants a viable chance of winning. When you are new you won't notice much, but team games are a very different dynamic from 1v1 games so while you are learning I think you should either find a partner who you can trust, or try to learn from 1v1s. When you lose, go to the history and click back through the game, from the beginning, and try to understand where you messed up, and what the opponent did/shouldn't have done. If you are really serious, try to do this with the top ladder games from the top 25 or so players. You will get a sense of what picks will work and the like, when to stack (make large concentrations) of troops and attack the opponent, and the like. Even the losers of those games are good, so study both sides!

Level means nothing. Ladder rankings and community reputation however, will, with regards to judging whether a player is good. Somewhat ironically players with win-rates in the 60s-high 70s are usually better than players with 80%+, because the latter often farm their wins on unsuspecting noobs.

The basic tips I can give you that should help you everywhere you go -

Use your history in and out of game - study your opponent, avoid wasteland bonuses, etc.

If you are losing by a lot, surrender. Its not required but it is considered basic etiquette by decent/higher level players. Any decent player will not think worse of you.

ABSOLUTELY AVOID BEING BOOTED. Many players and clans reject players who get booted too often. Consider whether you want multiday or RT games. 5 min with no autoboot is usually good for RT (real time) games. In mutliday settings, go through

Single player games will be a bit helpful for grasping the basics. Autogames are fine for learning the basics too. I would avoid other games for a whiel until you at least understand autogames decently.

Always, always read settings before you join games. Even Autogames at first.

(in almost every common setting) - expand into safe areas, try to break opponents bonuses, protect your own, never assume your opponent will leave your bonuses, etc. alone. A good one will not. Defend choke points to avoid double/triple bordering (when an opponent controls one territory that reaches many of your spots at once. Really hard to defend.)

Any player who is genuinely trying to help will probably see that you are new, and will not (should not) begrudge a bit of an explanation for why they want you to do a different move. If they can't explain it very well, then they likely are not very good themselves. If they tell you in a game with few players and a lot of big bonuses to concentrate your picks in one area, they don't know what they are talking about. In almost every template, Bottleneck's post takes precedence - https://www.warlight.net/Forum/68452-warlight-masters-spread-out

I am not sure what Taran means? DARKLORDS is better then it reputation, Turtles and Masters are a bunch of friendly guys (who btw, is not really more skilled then MH.)

and the WL Staff clan is the official WL workers. SO why avoid them? I mean, you won't get into the clan, but that is a given.

Now for the real talk, DO you, Tsunami, play chess? Your profile pic is dope :D If yes, and also if you are any good please state your interest in a chess game.

    MASTER Clan- ditto

Actually the Masters are quite the opposite. Master of the Dead, Master of desaster and Sephiroth amongst other masters, have actually spent quite a bit of time helping me to improve personally. I do know they have spent quite a bit of time helping other players too. As long as you are a player with a genuine interest in improving, they're very noob friendly believe it or not :P

They have set up a teaching clan here: https://www.warlight.net/Clans/?ID=245 which seems to work in the same way as Lynx and my clan 101st.

edit: Vitriol has given me more than enough reasoning to revise my opinion of CORP. :3

@Taran - the Turtles and Masters are usually pretty open to teaching you if you ask them decent questions after a game. (Unless you are me and bugged certain members far too much. lol!) Its more that they are stricter about who actually gets into the clan.
