Should the Khazar Khanate be included? It's hard to tell whether it had collapsed by this point or not.

I think Kyiv ended the Khazar kingdom by this point. Their capital borough was burned down to the pits in the 900s, but the Khazars still brought about many problems after that. The Khazar historiography goes blank after that, nothing is really too sure, but they seem to have lived on the Caspian shores.

Milan and London less than Winchester? That seems strange

Winchester was the capital of England at this time, not London, and this was before Milan had risen to become a major city - it was still fairly small at this time.

Ghent was from 1000 until 1550 the biggest city in the low countries. And meanwhile it would become the third largest city in northwestern Europe (after London and Paris). Be sure to add Ghent on that list too.

And that's not even everything. The lower countries in particular had overpopulation and an considerably high urbanisation rate during the Middle Ages which was unseen at that time. There were many populated cities all across the lower countries especially in the southern netherlands (present-day Belgium).

Liege and Utrecht were also seen as considerable big cities for their standards in 1000. Don't forget to add them too.

YAY CITIES!

On the subject of christian cities:

Novgorod should be a 6. The republic was one of the longest surviving states during that era and they endured subjugation by the mongol horde.

Athens was quite a large byzantine city and deserves a mention imo.

Ethiopia should have a city.

Also, Venice could use a city, too.

@Belgian: Ghent is a good suggestion, I will add that, but I don't think I can add the other two, it would mess up the balancing to have three massive cities near each other.

@Zephyrum: Okay, I will up Novgorod. I'm also happy to add Venice, but what value do you think it should be? As for Ethiopia, good point, I will look into it. Finally, I'll consider Athens, but it may be bad for balancing to have it.

This is Flanders. Everything east of the Scheldt is German domain.
Everything west of the Scheldt is French domain.

Ghent (Germany): 7

While it is true that Ghent had some parts of the city located on the eastern side of the river, it cannot be denied that the biggest part of the city was located on the French domain.

If you use google maps on Ghent for example you'll clearly see that the city centre can be entirely found on the eastern side of the river and not the western side. Is it really that smart to classify Ghent as a part of Germany if the biggest part of it is not located within these boundaries?

For Venice, at this time, it was still growing, so a 6~8 should be fine. 7 maybe?

As for Athens hurting balancement, I really don't think balancement should be the focus here. A good scenario maker will be able to make a template by nerfing and buffing bonuses; the more cities you represent, the more versatile is the map.

I for one have a really hard time making a game with Bulgaria in the 30YW map due to the lack of cities in it's region.

And the greek region is completely desolate despite being quite rich at the time.

Chernigov was probably the third or fourth weightiest borough in Kiev. I think it was second wealthiest borough in the country. I'd rid fully Novgorod-Seversk, it was only first aforesaid in 1044, and never was that weighty. Pereiaslav should be in, though, it was very weighty, and Rostov was also a weighty borough. Also, Polotsk and Murom were also weighty.

I don't think I'll add the Cumans - they were really just a tribal confederation. What I mean by that is that I won't include them as a bonus, but I will still add larger territories north of the Black Sea.

PS: I know I haven't done anything for the last couple of days, I've been a bit busy. I'll try and get some done today.

Forgive me for asking, but:

1. What about the Pomeranian/Wallachian/Highland areas of the map? They don't have much, yet there were nations.
2. Will there be any more addition to the land between Alodia, Makuria, and Ethiopia?
3. Um... I forgot

1) I will include territories for those lands, but they will be large and be in large bonuses. The main point of them would just be so scenario makers could make games that work for the rest of the Middle Ages, not just he 11th Century.

2) Probably not, I can't find enough contemporary borders or city names to do so.

Don't expect much more names from me, I'm going to be pretty busy.

Saraushta -> Saurashta

Kutch is not an island, on most maps, even though it is seasonal, probably the water is just more of a marsh, not really stopping anyone to go through it.

KS3 -> Patan
KS2 -> Sabarkantha
KS4 -> Bharuch
KS5 -> Sanjan

Inner Gujarat (bonus) -> Gujarat

Some latitude and longitude lines are helpful, in case I do come back for more naming. Also, I recommend filling all the map except the fully undwelled lands.

A cool "twist" would be to turn this map so that South becomes North (upsidedown, as that was common in mapping of the time). Or, since this relates to the Crusades, to turn it to the East (Yerushalem is to the east of Europe), as was oft in European mapping, as well.
