New Concept: Fog Cards: 9/6/2015 16:27:56

I've discussed this a little bit in an earlier thread (https://www.warlight.net/Forum/94408-taking-warlight-next-level), but I decided to flag this idea here in a separate post, since it seems interesting.

Here's the idea:

We know that Recon and Surveillance cards allow us to change the Fog settings for a given player for a temporary period. For instance, even though the map has Normal Fog, you can play a Reconaissance card and suddenly you have "No Fog" in a selected area (even if the game uses Light Fog or Heavy Fog, for example).

Can this be used to create new "Fog Cards"?

I'd love to see a card which allows you to "light up" an area for all to see. Like a Recon card, but it shows the selected area to EVERYONE playing. This could have all kinds of interesting uses.

I can also imagine some very interesting cards which temporarily assign *higher* levels of Fog to parts of the map.

You have a large army coming through to attack your enemy, so you play a "Fog" card to hide a certain bonus while you take it over. You must play blind, but you're confident you've prepared enough and your opponent's income is low enough that you will win.

Or maybe you want to create some Blockades to defend an area, but you don't have enough armies to stop your opponent. So you play a Complete Fog card on a bonus and then Blockade it. Your opponent can still break through, but will he dare? He may wait to get some Recon cards first, buying you time to raise an army for defense.

Interesting possibilities, right?

Now, also keep in mind that the duration of Recon cards can be changed in the Settings!

That means that a clever person could set the duration arbitrarily high (e.g. 1000 turns) and then use these cards to create very interesting scenarios. Play a "Reveal all" card on a section of the map, and for the rest of the game, everyone can see what happens there. Would be great in a map with a strategic chokepoint or a "capital city" (the Game of Thrones map, or some Roman Empire maps).

Play a "Dense Fog" on a part of the map, and that area becomes difficult for anyone to explore and conquer. You could use that to create an "asteroid belt" or an "impassable swamp".

Thoughts? Is this possible? What other clever uses of this technology can you imagine?

Thanks! Any other ideas for things we could do with this?

Not a bad idea, how about an additional checkbox for the conventional recon-cards when setting up a new game;
- play for everyone(checkbox)

+1 for the ideas of M. Poireau.

PowerPos, could you clarify your idea?

I haven't made a Uservoice. Worth discussing first, I think!

As far as powerpos's suggestion, I think it's to enable any kind of Fog card to "act for everyone" as an option.

I'd prefer different cards, myself. Otherwise you can't have both in play at the same time.

Does anyone know enough about the coding of the Recon/Surveillance/Spy cards to have an idea of how easy or hard it would be to implement this?

This is a sweet idea, especially for ffa games. I like the idea of being able to apply heavy fog to certain parts of the map especially.

My earlier idea of a "bunker", from the thread I linked in my first post, could be implemented this way, too.

Use a "Dense Fog" card set to 1000 turns on a certain strategic point, and now no one except the person holding the bunker/fort has any idea how many armies there are in it, making it very difficult to capture.

I'm curious if anyone has had any further thoughts on this topic. I think it could create new map ideas, scenarios, and templates, making a more varied and dynamic battlefield.

(Imagine, for instance, a map with mountain peaks or "high points" which can always be seen by all players. Now, if you wish to attack your neighbour, you have an interesting choice: do you take the direct route across the mountain range, where you will certainly be seen, or move along the coast, which will take you longer and cost more armies, but may surprise your opponent? This kind of thing could be useful for certain "shortcut" connections on particular maps, leading to more varied strategy.)

Thanks, Epicular!

Another possible structure would be a "tunnel": an area through which armies can pass, but no one can see how many, when, or what happens inside the tunnel. That has interesting strategic implications, as well.

It seems no one knows about the coding of the cards. Even the moderators/members? Should I contact them to ask?

According to ps, all ideas on the forum must have a uservoice link for the idea to spend time in WL purgatory. Without this uservoice link, ps will go mad. He has special skills. He will hunt you. He will find you. He will kill.

ps Be careful.
