Fizzer, why was the wiki page on UNBEATEN deleted? You said that it was not possible to challenge everyone and win, but why should they have too win? I was merely posting factual information and intended to update it when the challenges finished.

Hey Fizzer,
 +
I'm one of the people who were working on the [[Nations Cup]] pages before you deleted them all. I understand you're not comfortable with adding pages on tournaments to the main namespace, but would it be all right to host this kind of thing on our user pages instead? And can you restore the history for the deleted pages so that we can at least copy the code somewhere else. It's really frustrating to have hours of work deleted without any sort of warning at all. Thanks.

Images

Hey,

Could it be possible to enable file upload here, and then move images from warlight.net to be hosted on the Wiki and be editable by users? Some of them could be made better, some are outdated (for example the image on Multi Attack looks as if it was taken on the "Retro Earth" ;) map). Matma Rex talk 11:53, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I agree it should be enabled ideally, but I didn't want to deal with the extra backup and security work. I'll make a note to look at it at some point, but for now feel free to e-mail me images at fizzer@warlight.net and I'll upload them. The multi-attack page definitely needs work. Help page

I noticed a few moments ago that there seems to be no help page at the moment. Do you think that this could be added somewhere to the Main Page like in a seperate section or a link to an article called "Articles that need creating or expanding" That someone who is familar with what a help topic might contain could create the page and help users. Recent spam

Hi, I think we need to add some new layers to antispam. I suggest to add the following line (taken from here, if it maters):

((removed))

Done. Maybe we should also upgrade to a stronger captcha? Fizzer

Yes, that could be good idea, but also be careful not to complicate it to the level no one will be able to read it. --Grzechooo (drop a line) 11:38, 19 November 2011 (UTC)

I put ReCaptcha in place a couple days ago. I know all captchas have been broken but hopefully it's good enough. If it's not, I have a backup plan. Fizzer

If I might add anything. I have found three anti-spam techniques to work great:

  • good CAPTCHA (which, however, is annoying to users)
  • good anti-spam service (I personally love sblam.com, but any will do; this, however, might put some strain on the servers)
  • and the best and simplest one: a hidden field during registration/editing, which the user should not fill.

The field just has to be clearly labeled for users as a fake (for text browsers, or the blind), clearly labelled to bots as real (a name attribute just like a real one from the form; change the real one's name to something else and fix up the code in backend accordingly), and I found it to stop 100% of spam. There are only two flaws: you have to implement this yourself (so it's different than anything else and "pstandard" spambots aren't able to bypass it - somebody would have to target the attack precisely at you, which is not really profitable unless you are Facebook or something), and it might theoretically annoy real users who use some kind of automatic form-filler (although any reasonably well-made one should ignore hidden fields; the non-filling of some fields is still IMO less annoying than CAPTCHA). Matma Rex talk 20:58, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

That's an interesting idea. I was also thinking about just making a custom CAPTCHA, as simple as "Enter the string 'foo'". It would be even simpler for new users, since that would be easier than ReCaptcha, and since it's custom I doubt any of the spambots would work without them making a custom handler for WarLight which is unlikely. Protection?

Hi, why did you protect Map Making? Matma Rex talk 20:45, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

Some people did nieve edits a couple times, such as inserting "Download Inkscape" as the first step in the overview. This isn't really appropriate for an overview, since it leads people to believe that Inkscape was required when it's just one option. Fizzer

Map guidelines

Did you mean to remove the two sections in this edit? [1]

They are quite obvious, but IMO it would be better if they were there, for clarity. Matma Rex talk 13:29, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Map guidelines enumerates things that are nice to have, but aren't required. Map requirements lists the things that maps must do. Those two items were listed in both, so I removed them from guidelines to make it clear that they're not optional. Fizzer

Ah. Silly me. Matma Rex talk 12:02, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
