If someone asked people in 1600 century who will be the dominant power everyone would have said spain but in the Late 18th century Uk became that

In 1960's it was 50-50 US and USSR 50% people wrong in 50 years

everyone knows finances are the key factor nowadays, and debt is a kee part of that. We just need to figure out the best producers of debt and those will likely be the greatest power

If you want to know which countries are most powerful, look at nukes.

US
Russia
China
India
Pakistan
North Korea
Israel
Italy
Germany
France
UK

Soon to hold nukes: Iran, Japan, both close to nuclear capabilities.

The nuclear club is just P5+(India, Pakistan, Israel, North Korea) right now. Not sure why you included Germany, unless you were counting the nukes it's lent under NATO, in which case you should include countries like Belgium as well.

Every one least expected Greenland to declare an independence war upon Denmark, which would prompt the interference of NATO (on Denmarks side)

then Greenland would win and harshly annex all of Canada, Scandinavia, Iceland, and build the largest army in the world

Yeah, because Greenland, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Canada have so many people to work with for military. You chose the most densely populated places in the world.

Italy and Germany do not have nukes.

Norway has a huge oil supply and a brilliant economy.

Switzerland is not "fucking stupid". This has no justification, because there is no justification to make about it. Switzerland is incredibly smart.

Nukes mean nothing anyway. Very few people are dumb enough to nuke a nuclear capable country. Economy is going to drive the world sooner or later, as war becomes less and less relevant in culture.

In conclusion: The answer is Kyrgyzstan.

So the conversation has turned to Switzerland? The country that lies about its neutrality. Switzerland has committed itself via international treaty to defend Liechtenstein should anyone attack it. You're not neutral if you're committed to defending anyone.

Hey, we don't know what Switzerland can do. That country has been neutral for 200 years. While everyone else was losing men and spending money, Switzerland was making a country-wide nuclear bunker. What if some of them are already living underground? It could be a lot more populated than we think. What if they've dug tunnels through the other countries in Europe. Switzerland is just waiting for the right time to strike, I'm telling you. It'll happen in WWIII. Everyone will be blowing each other up when suddenly from nowhere the Swiss invade every country and take over Europe.

Back to serious statements: China has a good shot at dominating the world economically, and if the EU can get it's shit together, we could possibly have a unified European state (unlikely, I know).

But my personal favorite, if unrealistic idea is that the obvious approaching decline of the United States (Bread and Circus anyone?) will allow Mexico and Canada to slowly leech parts of the country away, and causing small independent regions to form. This leaves Canada a ripe opportunity to ascend to super power status.

@Knyte: Technically, there are several more countries with nukes, they simply aren't making new ones.

China is powerful, but their economy is slowing and spiraling downwards and the environment is horrific. Just a matter of years before it collapses into another civil war.

China is powerful - their economy is slowly decelerating (as all economies do when they get big).

I think China will hold the spot for most powerful country (especially in it's favourable relation to America), unless India has a miracle (America doesn't have population to compete at the level China's at).

Will China collapse into another civil war? I doubt it. They are doing very well, managing to hold a decent grip of power, while slowly giving more liberties to their people.

Their economy is very good, but has suffered a small collapse with a crash of their stock markets recently, but they will easily pick up from that, and probably emerge the strongest again, as their stock market crashing affects all other countries in the world, because the trading and loaning system is so intertwined.

Their environment is indeed terrible, and if they don't sort that out they're going to have serious problems.

Another competitor that might be able to challenge China is the EU, if they manage to unite, but I highly doubt they'd manage to do this quick enough.

EU challenge China? Your kidding, right?

EU has a terrible economy. Greece will eventually be shown the door. That COULD lead to spain and italy leaving. Spain, Italy, Frace, Portugal all have bad economies.

Germany is the only true economic power in the EU (except Britain, and Britain doesn't even use EU currency).

The EU does not have a terrible economy. It actually has a very good one, better than America's but not better than China's. If they unite, they need to turn into an even bigger (I quote Colonel) "A big socialist machine". So they can manage to distribute the wealth more evenly across this potentially future nation. Greece has a terrible, terrible economy right now, and there is no help, other than if they accept donations and bailouts. Why exactly would Spain and Italy leave? That is ridiculous. Spain would not be sustainable without the EU, and Italy is not too too much better. France has a very good economy, bigger than the UK's however it is slowly declining. Portugal, Spain indeed have bad economies. Italy is more robust economically than you might think.

If EU were to unite, Britain would have to end up using the euro, because it would be impossible to run a nation that is disunited fiscally, like the EU is right now, and that is causing problems still, but they'd be even worse as a single country.

EU has a terrible economy.

With just 7% of the world’s population, the EU's trade with the rest of the world accounts for around 20% of global exports and imports.

Around two-thirds of EU countries’ total trade is done with other EU countries.

Trade has been hit by the global recession, but the EU remains the world’s largest player accounting for 16.4% of global imports in 2011. The EU is followed by the United States with 15.5% of all imports, and China with 11.9%. The EU was also the biggest exporter, accounting for 15.4% of all exports – compared with 13.4% for China and the 10.5% for the United States.
