Warlight's best 1v1 players are also, by extension, the ones that do the most for the game itself, generally speaking. You might not see them as much because they're sick of the forums and do most of their service in private channels, but people like sze, Gnuff, Gui, and other slightly less strong (but no less powerful, socially) players like ChrisCMU, maybe myself, and others, have contributed to the community far more than the average troll who only shows up on Warlight to argue on the forums. Please forgive us if we tend to look down on such trolls, but can you really blame us? You build your own reputation here. It's your actions, and how you choose to spend your time, that shape the way people think of you.

I'm offended by that.

I troll, yet I've played tons of games.
I've spent more time playing than trolling.

Your egualling trolls with people who are only on warlight forums and not games

You have played tons, yes, but I speak of skill, not quantity.... you need to work on your ladder stats. By all means, do be offended. :)

There's a difference between playing a lot of games and actually playing WL in the sense that you start improving and learning from better players who help you catch your rookie mistakes. Just saying that because about 3 months ago I thought I knew how to play WL and my low win rate was a "mistake" but it turned out that I just wasn't actually playing the game itself, at least not the way it should be played.

Edit: Not to imply I'm a good player now. A look at my ladder stats would make it obvious that I'm nowhere near that status. But I'm climbing and maybe one day I'll get a little bit closer.

i think of myself as a pretty lousy strategy player, but i am a connoisseur, and i have fun playing and really slowly learning. having no skill + forum posting =/= troll, but if someone has very little link to the actual game, then why are they here?

I know I'm not the best at warlight, but i like to think I'm at least decent at the game itself. Ignoring my boot rate, my 1v1 /2v2 /3v3 stats aren't completely trash. If you take into account that at least 1/3 of my 1v1's have been against higher tier players on WGL and the Ladders, it scales up pretty well. In fact, if i took out my booted games my stats would look better in general.

Hey knyte, i bet you such at playing axis and allies. Therefore, i get to call you a lowlife uneducated twit on the A&A forums. I bet you don't know the first thing about playing L5R (or even what the acronym means). I guess you have less strategic skill than a blind squirrel.

Point being, you can have fun on WL, but there's other games where you can't pull the same shit. (Not that i do the things i said in second paragraph. They really are hard to learn as far as games go).

Expansion!

ChrisCMU - Not sure if college bro or married with kids.

Mercer - I'm sure there is a Fizzer is Mercer conspiracy.

Fizzer - (i don't want to get banned).

Tyrion L. - Gets banned 4 months ago, thinks he's relevant.

Dr. Stupid - Expensive Kasparov. Comes with hacksaw!

Kur - Overpriced coffee.

Talking Fan - Used to be a talking taco. There are scientific breakthroughs to be made from this.

MMB - Is he the owner of talking fan? *shrug* Is he relevant? *shrug* Oh well, he can stay.

Shyb - Discount Stern McCrays.

Stern McCrays - He isn't relevant. Har Har Har.

Duke of the Rainbow - *same as Steen McCrays, same as shyb*

The difference is that I don't go on the A&A site to trash other players on the forums. If I went to the A&A site, it would be to actually play the game and get good at it instead of making absurd political rants on the forums, making suggestions that would break the game, or relentlessly attacking players on a personal level.

Also, I've never played a game without eventually getting good at it competitively (unless you don't count the 272-9 record I had in Uber-tier Pokemon games (back when I played), without which I'm left with 4-6 results in UU tier and 3-2 in OU tier, nothing special)... so that A&A scenario would never happen. :D

You missed the point entirely. Just because your not#Elite doesn't mean you can be trashed by other players.

And you would be trashed because at some point you would suck bad.

You wouldn't have to go on forums even, your teammates would remind you how crappy you are (A&A is a 3p v 2p game).

You seem to be under the ideal that even though you're good or bad at a game, you have any more or less pull on the forums. Having more skill usually just offers better recognition as far as WL fora goes, and on a community-based site, recognition is not everything.

And as far as card games, 50 - 39 L5R stats are better than 10,000 - (-5)any-other-card-game. L5R is often considered the chess of card games, for a good reason. It's complex and strategic af.

I don't play card games, but that's an interesting fact.

I think you're also missing the point- I don't bash players on forums for not being elite. I'm far from an elitist- CORP is an incredibly inclusionary clan and the vast majority of our players aren't able to play on the 1v1 ladder due to low levels.

Let me put it this way- I manually operate two leagues when I could automate them, just because automation would exclude players below L43. I spend time each day tracking and creating CORP Strategic League and CORP Challenge League (no relation to CORP beyond the fact that I maintain them in the name of Scorpio Dojo) games when I could instead have a script doing all the work for me (and not have to worry about a thing) just because doing so would exclude low-level players. My Open Tournament quota is full right now because I'm hosting tournaments I don't even participate in, just to help lower-level players level up and get better at 1v1 ladder settings so they can join the ladder.

In my perfect world, people wouldn't get bashed on for being noobish players. Newbies are great- they keep a game alive. Hell, at one point I wasn't even able to win a ladder game, so I'm sympathetic to newbies.

However, there are two types of bad player that bother me:

1. The trolls. The people who have no interest in getting better but simply like the "social aspect" of the game- the people who go around trying to disrupt clans, take Manager Rights, basically get a feeling of acceptance or power, usually through dirty things like harassing other players on forums. I think that these players ultimately hurt the community in their drive for power or their... weird breakdowns/rants/etc. They also say some very disturbing things and often talk extremely ignorantly while attacking others as ignorant.

2. The people who have no interest in getting better and then decry everything they can't win at. Like the guy who says Guiroma 1v1 is a bad template because he can't win on it, never acknowledging the fact that his combat strategy is utterly broken and costs him a bonus each turn starting from first encounter, sometimes more.

In other words, if you're here to play and get better at the game, I'm on your side. If you're here not for the game itself but for the "social" reasons, and constantly pounce at the opportunity to attack the legitimacy of strategic rankings because you yourself wouldn't be great but can at least hide your shittiness when you claim to be an "RPer," then, fuck you too, buddy.

I'm neither. I am simply a casual warlight player. I like going on the forums because it is an interesting environment. So what if i don't play the game seeking to be the best, i have fun playing diplomacy, or fun little custom scenarios or little games-within-games. This game isn't meant to be played in any single, set way. It's a feature that is glued to the game : having it your way.

When you say you're not an elitist and then bash people who don't play the game the way you do, it really makes you sound like an elitist.

Then it's my fault for mischaracterizing you and mentally categorizing you alongside Kapy/Juq and Tyrion Lannister. Looks like I mistook your attempt at humor as a personal attack (although the whole meth and Japanese flags thing tends to do it).

As do I. However, there's also a class of players that disparages strategy to hide their shortcomings as strategic players, unfortunately. Plus diplo requires some basic strategy as well.

Okay. I just want to leave it here then. I think the beef is resolved.

And yes dude lol. The meth thing is what is commonly referred to in comedy as the "hook" or "bait". Then, saying you got addicted to Japan instead is the real joke, the"meat". It was also a really awesome setup for the lolicon punchline.

But yes i do not like Xy/TL etc. As far as playing the game goes.

I tried making strategic templates. I cri evritim lol

How well you can beat someone at Warlight is one-hundred percent worthless outside of this website.

Learning how to beat someone in Warlight teaches you strategic thinking, some not that basic math and advanced planning. I'm pretty sure these skills are very valuable outside Warlight as well.

It's maybe also worth noting that there is a higher than expected number of computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians, engineers, programmers here as well as a bunch of (under)grad students and high school students with a background in exact and applied science.

Do you ever consider that the majority of players not only aren't on the ladder, but don't care to have to log on every day?

My boot rate is bad as it is (cause of my schedule) don't need it higher.

Wrong.
Many, many people don't necessarily care about improvement; they care about playing for fun.

Your definition of "actually playing WL" doesn't necessarily fit others.

Could I play a lot better, strategically, than I do? Yes, definitely.

But, honestly, the only time I take WL seriously is in the few coin games I've played with the 100 coins i received for free.

Go to almost any massively multiplayer online game (mmog), and look for a while, and you will generally find the same thing.
