Pretty much half of the first round games are done and the second round games have just been created.

There isn't much to go over yet so I'll just list the results so far. There have been 3 boots/nonjoins. The team organisers could maybe check them out. There isn't much time to make subs this season since the games start every week. But on the other hand, you only boot one game per round.

ANZ B and POL A have fractions in scores because of incomplete teams for the opening round.

Group A

ITA A 3:0,5 ANZ B
CAN A 2:0 BEL A - boot from Belgium
USA C 1:0 NOR

Group B

GER A 3:0 FRA B
UK A 1:0 POL B
USA B 1:3 ITA B - boot from USA

Group C

FRA A 2:1 USA D - boot from France
ANZ A 2:1 HIS A
NL B 2:1 GER B

Group D

USA A 3:0 UK B
POL A 2,5:2 NL A
HIS B 4:1 ANZ C

The third round has just started, the second round is halfway done and the first round is almost finished.

Team | points | max points

Group A

CAN A | 6 | 27
BEL A | 6 | 27
NOR | 6 | 27
ANZ B | 3.5 | 24.5
ITA A | 3 | 25
USA C | 2 | 24

1st round

ITA A 3:3,5 ANZ B
CAN A 3:3 BEL A
USA C 2:4 NOR A

2nd round

ITA A 0:2 NOR
CAN A 2:0 USA C
BEL A 3:0 ANZ B

This was predicted to be the most balanced group and it doesn't disappoint. We have 3 teams tied for first place at the moment - Canada, Belgium and Nordics - and the 3 remaining teams have enough firepower to close the gap still.

It's maybe a bit surprising to see Italy in the lower half of the group, but even more surprising to me is seeing Nordics so high. They met USA C already in the qualifiers where they lost 2:4 twice, but in this stage they reversed it and beat Americans 4:2 and are leading 2:0 in their matchup against Italy. Good for them!

Group B

GER A | 6 | 28
USA B | 5 | 26
ITA B | 4 | 28
UK A | 3 | 26
FRA B | 2.5 | 23.5
POL B | 2 | 27

1st round

GER A 5:1 FRA B
UK A 2:1 POL B
USA B 1:3 ITA B

2nd round

GER A 1:1 ITA B
UK A 1:3 USA B
POL B 1:1 FRA B

I think most people expected Germany and UK to advance, with perhaps USA B giving them a good fight. But I don't think a lot of people predicted Italy B to be doing so well. Especially since that team didn't exactly rock their qualifying group, with just 10 wins in 24 games there.

POL B have respectable 40% win rate, but it doesn't say much when you're the slowest team in the entire competition :p

Group C

FRA A | 8.5 | 26.5
HIS A | 6 | 27
ANZ A | 5 | 29
NL B | 5 | 25
GER B | 4 | 21
USA D | 3.5 | 21.5

1st round

FRA A 3:2 USA D
ANZ A 2:1 HIS A
NL B 3:3 GER B

2nd round

FRA A 5:1 GER B
ANZ A 2:0 NL B
HIS A 4:1 USA D

France lost some points to nonjoins but they have 100% win rate in games they actually played.

Also it's funny to see GER A beating FRA B 5:1 in group B, and then FRA A beating GER B 5:1 the next round here.

France not advancing would be a massive upset. And the way things are looking, the 1st round match between ANZ and HIS could decide the other quarterfinalist.

Group D

USA A | 11 | 30
HIS B | 7 | 27
POL A | 6.5 | 26.5
NL A | 5 | 26
ANZ C | 1 | 20
UK B | 0 | 21

1st round

USA A 6:0 UK B
POL A 4,5:2 NL A
HIS B 5:1 ANZ C

2nd round

USA A 5:0 ANZ C
POL A 2:2 HIS B
NL A 3:0 UK B

USA are dominating with 11 wins and no losses so far, no other team comes close. Although they haven't played against any A team yet.

Poland got a solid win against Netherlands 1st round but now they seem to be struggling against HIS B.

HIS B are currently the best performing non-A team with 7 wins and 3 losses and hold 2nd place in this group. It will be interesting how they do in futher rounds, especially against the Netherlands.

-----

The next round starts on Sunday. Yeah I know it's fast. I suggest not waiting with substitutions to the last moment. It could also be a good idea to keep track of players booting or going inactive in your teams. I didn't list them in this post, but all boots and nonjoins every round are listed on the official spreadsheet, on the _Main R1-R5 tabs at the bottom : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kv2E-WfMKo4-YqkdHAqvOHMaXN1h94S4vOONnN-hYEs/edit?usp=sharing

185 games completed, 175 left to go. We're halfway through the group stage and results are a bit more clear.

Team | points | max points

Group A

BEL A | 9 | 25
NOR | 8 | 24
CAN A | 7 | 23
ITA A | 6 | 24
USA C | 5 | 24
ANZ B | 4.5 | 21.5

BEL A 5:1 ANZ B

3rd round

ITA A 1:1 BEL A
CAN A 2:2 NOR
USA C 1:0 ANZ B

Well, maybe in this group the results aren't very clear yet.
We have a very nice gradient in points scored, with Belgium at top with 9 points. But it's not enough to feel safe, because here anyone can beat anyone. Or rather, anyone can draw against anyone? The number of ties so far is pretty insane.

Group B

GER A | 8 | 27
USA B | 8 | 23
ITA B | 8 | 22
FRA B | 8 | 18
UK A | 6 | 24
POL B | 6 | 24

1st round

GER A 5:1 FRA B
UK A 3:2 POL B
USA B 1:5 ITA B

2nd round

GER A 3:1 ITA B
UK A 1:3 USA B
POL B 3:3 FRA B

3rd round

GER A 0:1 POL B
UK A 2:1 ITA B
USA B 3:1 FRA B

And this group is even more fun! What a mix. Four teams tied in point scored. Germany has pretty good advantage in max points, while UK A, POL B and ITA B all have exactly 50% win rate. USA B very slightly above that, FRA B below.

Group C

ANZ A | 14 | 29
FRA A | 10.5 | 24.5
HIS A | 8 | 23
NL B | 7 | 21
USA D | 5.5 | 16.5

ANZ A 5:1 HIS A

ANZ A 4:0 NL B
HIS A 5:1 USA D

3rd round

FRA A 1,5:2 HIS A
ANZ A 4:0 GER B
NL B 4:2,5 USA D

Australia and New Zealand take the lead as the most impressive team so far with a 14-1 win-loss record. They are the only team that seems to have secured the quarterfinals already, with 6 point lead in both current and max points over the 3rd placed Hispanics.

It's France who need to prove their worth against Hispanics and Australians, and it's going a bit iffy. France is slightly losing both of them atm, but it's still early.

Anyway, it doesn't look like any of the B or D teams could advance here, but they are definitely trying with some good wins here and there.

Group D

POL A | 14.5 | 25.5
USA A | 13 | 26
NL A | 9 | 24
HIS B | 9 | 23
UK B | 6 | 17
ANZ C | 3 | 11

1st round

USA A 6:0 UK B
POL A 4,5:2 NL A
HIS B 5:1 ANZ C

2nd round

USA A 6:0 ANZ C
POL A 3:2 HIS B
NL A 3:2 UK B

3rd round

USA A 0:3 NL A
POL A 6:0 ANZ C
HIS B 2:2 UK B

USA dominated the first two rounds with the perfect 12-0 record. And then they choked on the Netherlands, currently losing 0:3.

Poland used this opportunity to take first place in this group. Will they hold it? The fourth round against USA will be decisive, currently 1:1.

The Dutch weren't in a great spot after losing the first round against Poland, but now who knows. Add another 3 wins against USA and it might do the trick.

Or maybe it's HIS B who will advance? 2:3 against Poland is not a bad result, and now they have direct games against NL and USA remaining. It's still in their hands for sure.

UK B and ANZ C likely won't advance, but UK B especially looks like an annoying opponent, getting 2 wins almost every round so far.

---

Last round starts next Sunday. The template is Aseridith light fog (again). I could't find a 7th template that would be interesting enough, so we're gonna have a repeat.

And then the quarterfinal templates are Aseridith and MME WR again, the two last templates from the group phase. Just something to keep in mind when doing substitutions.

We're 75% done!

Let's look at group D first this time.

Team | Points | Max Points

Group D

POL A | 19.5 | 24.5
USA A | 16 | 24
NL A | 16 | 21
HIS B | 12 | 19
UK B | 8 | 10
ANZ C | 4 | 7

1st round - French Brawl normal fog

USA A 6:0 UK B
POL A 4,5:2 NL A
HIS B 5:1 ANZ C

2nd round - Tarabonia's Choice

USA A 6:0 ANZ C
POL A 4:2 HIS B

5th round - Aseridith light fog

USA A 1:0 HIS B
POL A 4:0 UK B
NL A 3:0 ANZ C

Poland is in a great spot. They need just 2 more wins to reach quarterfinals, and that's in worst case scenario that NL wins all their remaining games. It's possible that Poland qualified already. They're also likely to win the group if they fend off USA in their 3 remaining matchups.

USA was doing great until the disaster on Landria happened. Losing 1:5 against Netherlands puts some pressure on them. They still have very high max points and they will qualify if they win their games against Hispanics B and Poland, but they don't have much room for error anymore. And they're clearly taking their time since their move speed slowed down a lot.

As impressive as it was, 5:1 against USA might still not be enough for the Netherlands after their poor first 2 rounds. They will also need to kill HIS B's chances on MME WR, then crush ANZ C as much as possible while also hoping that USA loses some games.

HIS B won't die easily though. All their remaining games are against NL and USA and if they win them all, they can finish second. Easier said than done, but at least they don't have to hope for USA to lose games. They can force them to lose.

UK B finishes 5th in group after some very mixed results. Tie against the last placed ANZ C, but also tie against Netherlands. Respectable 2:4 against HIS B but 0:6 against both Poland and USA.

ANZ C didn't win a lot of games in this stage so I hope they were having fun in the qualifiers.

Group C

ANZ A | 21 | 27
FRA A | 14.5 | 22.5
HIS A | 14 | 20
NL B | 9 | 16
GER B | 8 | 11

HIS A 5:1 USA D

3rd round - Landria

FRA A 2,5:2 HIS B

NL B 4:2,5 USA D

4th round - MME WR

FRA A 1:3 ANZ A
HIS A 3:1 NL B
USA D 2:3 GER B

5th round - Aseridith light fog

FRA A 2:0 NL B
ANZ A 3:0 USA D
HIS A 3:1 GER B

Australia and New Zealand is the first team to officially qualify, congrats!
They are also very close to securing first place in their group with their impressive 21-3 win-loss ratio and honestly speaking, they are looking like favourites to win the cup this season.

France, the defending champions with pretty much the same golden lineup as last season has trouble keeping up. They are much closer to 3rd place than to 1st right now.

The Hispanic team is 3 max points behind, which is not a small gap when you have just 6 games remaining. But contrary to France, they took their loss against ANZ first round and are left with theoretically easier matchups, apart from the remaining 2 games against France. They can't afford to lose them.

As was expected from the start, the other three teams weren't really able to challenge the teams above. NL B theoretically still has chances for 2nd place if some weird stuff happens but let's be real. Last season they finished 4th in group C and now they'll repeat exactly that while GER B and USA D fight for 5th.

Group B

GER A | 14 | 24
USA B | 13 | 21
UK A | 12 | 21
FRA B | 10 | 16
POL B | 9 | 19
ITA B | 8 | 15

1st round - French Brawl normal fog

GER A 5:1 FRA B
UK A 4:2 POL B
USA B 1:5 ITA B

2nd round - Tarabonia's Choice

GER A 5:1 ITA B
UK A 1:5 USA B
POL B 3:3 FRA B

3rd round - Landria

GER A 3:2 POL B
UK A 5:1 ITA B
USA B 4:2,5 FRA B

4th round - MME WR

GER A 1:0 UK A
POL B 1:1 USA B
FRA B 3,5: 1 ITA B

5th round - Aseridith light fog

GER A 0:2 USA B
UK A 2:0 FRA B
POL B 1:0 ITA B

Germans have been in first for some time now, but if they get overconfident, they'll miss promotion. They got the strongest opponents last and they're not gonna repeat the 5:1s from their first rounds. Nonetheless, they're leading and everyone in this group would like to be in their position.

USA B... well, that 5:1 against UK A is great and all, and so is 2:0 against GER A, but it would've helped more if their opening round wasn't so carp.

UK A currently in 3rd, but surprisingly few games are finished in the top 3 GER-UK-USA B triangle and everything can happen.

POL B doesn't believe in winning. Instead they try to get a tie every round. Also they picked up the pace and they're not the slowest team of this stage anymore. Although still the slowest in this group. This has the side effect of their max points still being high enough to theoretically challenge the top 2. And maybe even not theoretically but practically? If they were able to score 2 points against Germans and UK, they could perhaps score a few more in their last games.

FRA B is above POL B in points scored but their points max isn't so great. Same goes for ITA B. They scored 5 points against USA B in their opening round and then they added just 3 more.

You know how they tend to say that in league competitions, games against direct rivals for promotion are worth double points? Well then here all the games are worth double points. It's so close that I'm not gonna analyse it team by team.

ANZ B is a bit behind in max points but still doing far better than last-placed teams in other groups.

4 out of 6 teams will barely miss the quarterfinals and I just hope they won't end up being too disappointed.

I'll take a stab at Group A because I do think it's the most interesting Group even if it is the hardest to analyze. As I see this Group, we know three things already:

1. The 'A' teams (Canada, Italy, Belgium, Nordics) are the favorites to advance over the 'not-A' teams (ANZ B, USA C) in this Group. There have been five matches where an 'A' team has dueled a 'not-A' team and in 4 of these 5 matches the 'A'-team has won 4-2 (or more).

2. There isn't a great deal of separation in this group. There have been nine matches with enough games to form a decent sample size and in 8 of these 9 matches it has ended up 4-2 or closer. No one is pulling away.

3. There aren't any heavy hitters in this group. While other groups have teams achieving 80% win rates, this isn't happening in Group A. The qualifier teams had only modest results in the qualifiers and although the seeded teams (Canada and Italy) are slowly starting to demonstrate superiority, they aren't better by much. Whoever does emerge here will likely struggle in the playoffs.

Power Rankings

1. Canada (15pts, 6 remaining)
3-3 vs Belgium on FB
4-2 vs USA C on Tarabonia
3-2 vs Nordics on Landria
4-0 vs Italy on MME
1-2 vs ANZ B on Aseridith

Canada has won or tied every matchup. They hold the tiebreaker against all opponents and at this time it looks like they won't need it. They are on track to earn not just the first QF appearance in the nation's history but also a top seed. It's close but if you have to pick one, Canada are the favourites to promote at this time.

2. Nordics (14pts, 4 remain, 2 GB)
4-2 vs USA C on FB
3-2 vs Italy on Tarabonia
2-3 vs Canada on Landria
4-2 vs ANZ B on MME
2-2 vs Belgium

The Nordics are exactly what you expect from an 'A'-team in this group. They've beaten the B/C teams by a little, not a lot; and they've played roughly even with the other A teams. They've used up all 12 games against the weaker teams and the remaining games will be harder from here on in. They have a slight edge for the #2 position.

3. Belgium (13pts, 5 remain, 2.5 GB)
3-3 vs Canada on FB
5-1 vs ANZ B on Tarabonia
2-4 vs Italy on Landria
1-2 vs USA C on MME
2-2 vs Nordics on Aseridith

This team started strong with a 3-3 tie against Canada and a 5-1 win against ANZ B. Landria is weird so we'll excuse the mis-step here and it's too early to say how the last two matches will go. This is a proven team with a decent track record in previous tournaments. Belgium is very much in the hunt for one of the two playoff slots.

4. USA C (11pts, 8 remain, 3 GB)
2-4 vs Nordics on FB
2-4 vs Canada on Tarabonia
3-1 vs ANZ B on Landria
2-1 vs Belgium on MME
1-1 vs Italy (plus a free win) on Aseridith

This team is deep but doesn't have the heavy hitters to win against proper bonafide A-team opponents. They've kept it close and are very much in the hunt but they will need to win these last MME games against Belgium and some outside help to slow down Nordics if they are to steal the 2nd slot and advance.

5. Italy (11.5pts, 6 remain, 3.5 GB)
2-3 vs ANZ B (plus a free win) on FB
2-3 vs Nordics on Tarabonia
4-2 vs Belgium on Landria
0-4 vs Canada on MME
1-1 vs USA C (plus a half point) on Aseridith

Disaster has struck the Italians, by far the weakest performance from the seeded teams. Four boot losses courtesy of PracticeOnly are part of the problem but the bigger problem is that they are losing the head-to-head against most of their opponents. It speaks to the depth of Group A that a perennial playoff team is struggling to find wins against a single opponent in this group.

6. ANZ B (9.5pts, 5 remain, 6 GB)
3-2 vs Italy (plus a half point) on FB
1-5 vs Belgium on Tarabonia
1-3 vs USA C on Landria
2-4 vs Nordics on MME
2-1 vs Canada on Aseridith

Super respectable showing from the Aussies and Kiwis, especially against seeded teams from Italy and Canada. This was an unlikely foray from the start and they are now officially mathematically eliminated. For ANZ to pull together 12 good players from a population of ~35 million is seriously impressive.

A quicker update this time.

Australia&New Zealand won group C while Poland is just 1 point away from winning group D.

In group A there are still 5 teams in the race, although Canada and Nordics are clearly in the lead and it will be tough for anyone to catch up.

Group B is a three-way-tie for first between GER A, UK A and USA B, while the other 3 teams fight for 4th place.

In Group C it's a duel between FRA A and HIS A for 2nd place, with France having a comfortable lead. It could be settled with just 1 more France win over Hispanics on Landria.

In Group D the Netherlands climbed up to 2nd place. USA still has more games remaining but if they don't convert them into points, they will miss the quarterfinals. The tiebreaker goes to the Netherlands in case of equal points.

The Hispanic teams are so interesting this season. Bahamut Rojo from HIS B won all his games. Tukuro from HIS B only lost 1 in the qualifiers and went 5-0 in the second stage. They clearly belong in team A. But all the players in HIS A also got good results across all rounds, so I can see how it ended up like this,

There are still 17 undefeated players, which is a lot more than I expected. I thought it would be fun to list them all. Of course some players got some easier wins in the qualifiers and their score looks more impressive in comparison. So it's not the MVP listing or anything like that. We'll do that after the season ends.

It's time to start thinking about the quarterfinals!
First of all, it was decided that this season and in all the future ones the quarterfinal pairs will be decided randomly and not AvsB CvsD like last season. Although 'randomly' may be too big a word here. The group winners will be seeded and teams from the same group or from the same nation can't meet until the final.

And now to remind the format for the final 8.

Templates are:
-quarterfinals: MME WR + Aseridith.
-semifinals: FB normal fog + Tarabonia
-final: Landria + Kate Upton Guiroma

Every player gets 2 games. With full teams that's 6*2=12 games total each matchup.
To avoid draws, we're making a 13th game right away.
Each team chooses a player, supposedly the best one among them, to play that 13th game. So he gets 3 games at the same time.
That player gets to ban 3 of the 6 templates listed above. The opponent does the same. They don't know each other's bans.
Their game will be played on a random template that wasn't banned by anyone.

To make it clear: the bans only affect that 1 extra game among two players in question, not the other 12 games.
Teams can pick a different player and different bans for quarterfinal, semifinal and final.

All the quarterfinalists should already start thinking, who among them should play that extra game and what templates he would ban.

Man, what an absolutely crazy season!
In group A, Nordics advance by 1 point margin.
In group D, Netherlands don't even have that. They advance through head-to-head record, having directly beaten USA 5:1.
Group B? Yeah even the head-to-head between Germany and UK is a 3:3 draw. They advance thanks to the last tiebreaker, which is the initial seeding. Or in other words, past season results. Although there's still one game remaining between Germany and USA B, so Germany can still grab 1st place.
Group C is the only group where the difference between 2nd and 3rd is somewhat visible, and yet I also feel bad for HIS A because even through all the groups were tough, this one looked super tough.

Like I explained one post above, I'm waiting for teams to choose their 'champions' for the quarterfinals, along with 3 vetoes. I'd really like to have them all sent to me before October 18th. We're already behind schedule (again) because we need to wait until literally all games in group B finish, annoyingly :p
Just send them to me through WZ mail or Discord. No need to wait until last minute. Vetoes are secret. I'm not gonna share any info and I'm impartial. Even through my team also plays, we have already decided who from my team is gonna play and what the vetoes are.
