Windows 10 end of life: 2024-06-03 16:06:27

Windows 10 will stop getting updates (even security ones) on 14 October 2025 https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/end-of-support.
There are relatively high hardware requirements to use Windows 11, notably CPU and secure boot. There is a workaround to bypass them on https://www.howtogeek.com/793389/why-is-windows-11-saying-system-requirements-not-met/. I wouldn't be in favour of using the workarounds because Windows could just force the requirements on you using other methods and possibly make your device unusable.

There are certain 'features' of Windows 11 that you should be aware of:

  • Bitlocker automatically enabled - prevents you from logging in if you didn't take note of the decryption key. Requires full reinstall to use again. You will loose all your files by doing that.
  • Collects your data (Telemetry) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2TyrLZT0r0
  • Recall / Copilot AI records your screen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9DnwB02hJw
  • Ads on Start menu
  • Forced OS updates without your consent (just like in Windows 10)

I would strongly recommend exploring alternative operating systems to ensure your device is kept secure and free from malware.

The most user-friendly flavours of Linux are Ubuntu, Pop!_OS, Linux Mint among others - https://www.google.com/search?q=user+friendly+operating+systems+linux.

You can run Linux from a USB if you want to try them out.

To run Steam Windows games on Linux:

  • Install Steam
  • Login to it
  • In the top-left, click Steam > Settings > Compatibility

    • Enable Steam Play for supported titles
    • Enable Steam Play for all other titles
    • Run other titles with [Proton Experimental]

  • Right-click a game in your Liberary > Properties > Compatibility

    • Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
    • Select Proton Experimental

  • If you tried the above steps and that still didn't work, check https://www.protondb.com/. Proton is developed by Valve and it's one of programs that Steam Deck uses to run Windows games.

Installing Linux operating system updates does not require a restart (unlike Windows) and you can download and install updates whenever you like.

most random post in this video game ever

Yeah, it sucks right?
I think I will switch to some linux come the time, not sure which distro tho

For those of you considering Linux Mint it fckn sucks and is borderline unusable. The interface is messy and hard to use, and I spent 3 days straight trying to search answers to countless problems before I gave up on it. Whoever designed it to be a 'beginner friendly' interface is nuts.

but 14 Months left to go, so still no need to worry :)

What are you talking about? Isn't Windows 10 supposed to be the last operating system from Windows?

It's the last *working* OS from windows.

When I had to open regedit twice within the first 5 minutes of my pc booting into W11 to fix some settings Microsoft forgot, I knew it was an even bigger pile of bugshit than I anticipated.

I’m currently using it and I haven’t had any usability issues. Make sure to connect to the internet before installing it so that drivers and other software is downloaded so that you don’t run into issues later.

I’ve seen stuff about Nvidia and Linux not working great together. Might need to install drivers yourself, which is why you should test it first before going ahead and installing it without verifying if it works.

If I ignore the 25MB free on my C drive, hence being unable to install updates, I am happy.

I've managed to upgrade to Linux kernel 6.5.0-35 from 5.15.0-112 without any issues. Just encase something fails, you should make a backup of your files and make a 'system restore point' using Timeshift or a similar program. Timeshift comes with Linux Mint Cinnamon by default.

What part of it "sucks"?

If it's Linux's limited* ability to run Windows apps, that's a different thing entirely.

* = use free open source software alternatives instead or use programs like Wine, Proton or Bottles instead (which replace API calls rather than being an emulator like VirtualBox).

no its not that its jut that things are designed horribly , and its borderline impossible to search for problems in the internet they don't help

even simple things like trying to remove the widgets or whatever form the desltop background were impossible. i tried to solve that by searching on the internet for 6 hours straight and apparently no one had any decent solution

also it made my fps drop like crazy even just using browser

so i reccomend anyone to preserve their sanity and not use mint because it is dang awful

You could use https://forums.linuxmint.com/ or make a Github account and create a new issue for the appropriate program.

If it's design choice, there are different linux distributions to choose from and you could change desktop environments.

The only issues I've had with it is

  • You dont get a low battery notification and have to install an Applet - Battery Applet with monitoring and Shutdown (BAMS) to get a low battery level notification
  • Bluetooth enabled by default (it's possible to change this using terminal commands - https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/linux-commands-reference-pdf/)
  • Pressing the F12 key doesn't restore previous state of Bluetooth (becomes auto enabled rather than remembering if it was disabled) but the developers closed the issue, moved it to a discussion rather than labelling it as a bug https://github.com/blueman-project/blueman/discussions/2395. Not even sure if they'll fix the issue.
