Mods for non-members?: 8/30/2022 22:39:31

I wanted to bring up this discussion in hope we can convince Fizzer that (some) mods need to be accessible for non-members. Right now it is behind the membership wall. Here's my opinion on this.

Standard and promoted mods become accessible for non-member players at level 50+ (exact number to be determined). These mods are used a lot, have (almost) no bugs or exploits and (most) are not that heavy for the servers to handle.

Why not all the mods? Experimental mods have a much higher chance to have some bugs in them. Sometimes a bug can set a whole game to a stop. Fizzer (and we) don't want to have non-finished games because the mods were not ready and crashed.

For those that worry about the number of mods that get available if promoted and standard mods are available for non-members, don't. I probably gonna have a chat with Fizzer about the mod rankings and all.

Memberships currently have the bragging rights for mods, tabs and 3D-maps. This is a bit to much imo, so that's another reason to let (a bunch of) mods become available for non-members

Don't forget that members also have the option to post images on the forums (:

EDIT: Swapped out the gif with a smaller one, so people with phone-sized screens can also view it.

EDIT 2: Just found out that gifs dont work in the app :/

Members should be given access to mega games. Non-members are sub-human and should be thankful for what they have.

Isn't this something he's already hinted at working on or ameliorating, when talking about his future (post-3D maps) plans on Samurai Jack's podcast? It sounded like he wanted to bring mods closer to the core game experience.

Either way, I shall join your rain dance.

Time to find a way how to make a P2W mod, then.

oh man if warlight finally becomes p2w that will be hilarious. Could easily do it too w/ tech trees or advancements that persist across games.

Commerce start as a mod for a while before integrated into main game. So at least we have one mod being made available for all players. It is quite a long time ago, though.

@l4v.r0v I believe he talked mostly about integrating mods into the main game. But a mod has to prove it works with everything without crashing and therefore has to be used a lot. Right now modded games are on the rise (there are more games on the open games page then 6 months ago) but they fill really, really slow.

When a bunch of mods are accessible for non-members, it will result in more modded games and more players playing with mods, which should slowly improve the basic knowlegde of mods for each player and increase the modded community

Huh, is this true? It's possible since Mods were added in April 2017 (https://www.warzone.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mods&oldid=3855) while Commerce was introduced in August 2017 (https://www.warzone.com/blog/index.php/2017/08/sneak-peek-commerce-games/) but I find no evidence of a Commerce mod on the thread reacting to the Commerce launch (https://www.warzone.com/Forum/273096-sneak-peek-commerce-games). The only gold-related mods I can find are ones that built on top of Commerce later.

I personally remember Commerce games getting added directly by Fizzer and incrementally fleshed out between April and November 2017 (Warzone rebrand), without any mods in the middle.

When a bunch of mods are accessible for non-members
Since the intent here seems to be to increase the volume of modded games, how will the cost & safety side be handled? Mods can break games, confusing non-members if this happens at scale. And mods execute possibly arbitrary code on the Warlight servers... so they could rack up costs without some pricing model. And that pricing model could, like for Mega Games, be prohibitive.

Well, I think it was, but I could be wrong. I do not have any evidence to support it now, just my memory.

how will the cost & safety side be handled

I never said Fizzer had to throw away the coin system for creating modded games. If Fizzer would make (some) mods accessible for non-members I would propose to leave the pay system as it is right now for members, but remove the weekly free game for non-members. This way members still have a small benefit from their memberships and still everyone can't create unlimited modded games

For the safety side, there is a mod ranking for a reason (although that is another topic, cos I would like to see it change a little). Only mods that are trusted (standard mods) and those in the promoted category shoud be available for non-members. I do agree that mods can break games, but those mods are (or at least should be) all in the experimental category.

Mods are community driven, it is also our task to watch an eye out for mods that become incompatible / outdated and report it to Fizzer so he could demote them. As far as I know there has not been a mod promoted or demoted in the last 6 months, which is I think due to the small community that actively use mods

It is indeed false. Although, Fizzer mentioned he touched some very old parts of the code to be able to add commerce to the game. So I wouldn't be surprised if the implementation of mods/commerce have been done partly simultanuously.
