America is a country of immigrants and we achieved greatness by accepting all the immigrants, even the poor ones and the ones people didn't like for their race (Jews, Italians, Irish, Japanese). Today people forget that we didn't have strict litmus tests for these people and it worked out great for us. We prospered when we didn't limit our immigration based on racism against Asians or Southern and Eastern Europeans.

America is the best because it takes the best from other countries and gives them an opportunity to thrive. There is nothing special about being born an American, but there is something special about becoming one.

Can we at least agree, that letting a Jewish scientist immigrate isn't like 100% exactly the same than opening the gates for some Mexican gangbangers?

I'm not that familiar with the history if the States but AFAIK all immigrants used to get checked in New York and unfit ones got sent back. From that point of view I believe the States should protect their borders and filter the immigration applicants according to whether they add value.

I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but the notion of America being great is a fairy tale limited to the Americas. If I had to choose another country to settle in, your country would not make it into my top 20.

Actually top 20 is harsh, but 15 sounds realistic. I'd move to Sweden before I moved to USA. Coming from a Dane, them's fightin' words.

Norman that is incorrect. Unlike Einstein who immigrated in 1933, the vast majority of the Jewish immigrants coming to the U.S. in the late 19th/early 20th century were very poor and unskilled. The U.S. let them in before heavily restricting Jewish immigration in 1924 after the Red Scare.

While some immigrants like Einstein were already skilled, the majority used their determination and hard work to become great. Admittedly, this was impossible for many blacks and Mexicans at the time.

I was referring to some of the older times but as a disclaimer, my knowledge kinda comes from popuplar movies.

Well, Jews are kinda famous for thriving under difficult cirumstances. In fact your example proves my point, that you can't just make a general ideological statement about immigration being good or bad but that you should be careful which kind of guys you let into your country.

Also you have to take into account that the average John Doe of a country probably doesn't emigrate. With some emigration waves in the past, the most unskilled have left the country. I'm thinking about the Italian hillbillies emigrating to Germany in the 1970s. A classic example of such a hillbilly would be a woman who is now in their 80s, she wanted to leave Germany after a few years but got stuck, she never actually learned German and the third generation after her does piss poor in school, even worse than their parents.

However then again nowadays some extremely high qualified Italians can't find a job in their country and emigrate to Germany. They are doing just fine here and I'm sure their kids will integrate well.
