Rise of Nations had a really cool Conquer The World mode where you had a Risk-style world map but for every attack (or defense) you had to play out an hour-long RTS mini-campaign.

The big world map looked like this:

While the gameplay at the low-level looked like this:

I used to play this game a lot growing up (middle school), but it was made for Windows XP and there was a period of a few years where no current operating system/hardware supported the game anymore. During that time, I occasionally got nostalgic and looked for similar games- but there really was nothing. About 4-5 years into the mass smartphone era (we're talking ~2012 here), I remember there was an influx of Risk-like games (well Risk-style maps but often really odd game mechanics on top of that- think Europa Universalis IV lite) on the app store. This was the closest I was gonna get to Rise of Nations for some time, but none of these stuck because the game mechanics were just weird and shitty.

Plus Rise of Nations had a bunch of interesting diplomacy mechanics + tech trees that I really liked. They didn't show up anywhere else, and neither did the whole real-time strategy aspect.

Eventually while cycling through these games I stumbled upon Warlight. It wasn't that much like RoN- no real-time strategy, but it's a great game in its own right. It's simple, satisfying, and super-customizable so I actually eventually stuck around to play diplo games on this site. I didn't really get into strategy until around 2015 or so, a solid 2 years after becoming active on this site.

I think I've played Warzone longer than any other video game I've picked up. Can't stress how much I enjoy the gameplay of what Fizzer's built.

I learned about it from my father. He was just looking for strategy games to play since he's a huge Risk fan and I guess he found this while searching online. He played it often and showed me it and I figured it would be cool and then I got hooked by all the people I met on the forums and seeing how skilled and dedicated people were, seeing new tournaments, clans and even whole game modes created and the game evolving every day.

I almost forgot about the game due to the level of school work I had from high school, but I remembered about this game just a few months ago out of the blue while thinking about something to play with people on another stream, and now I'm back to playing it like I used to do. Although now I actually focus on games over forums rather than vice versa. And yeah, technically speaking, this is by far the longest I've stuck with a particular game (around 6 and half years) which is amazing considering I rarely play games for more than like a year and switch often.

Googled "online risk like game". Found the single player levels. Played the crazy level 200 times to get the damned gold star with 75%WR. Never looked back ever since!

Woah, someone who actually plays Rise of Nations in their childhood? I thought I was the only one. I used to play that all throughout elementary school, and it probably started my interest of history which would develop later on.

After that, I looked for games throughout the Internet, which ended up most of them being really bad, until I eventually found WarLight in Kongregate. That eased for a while until 2015, when I actually found the website. Haven't looked back since.

Also, I've started to see an actual well-built strategy game develop for mobile, and it evolves something similar to EU4.

Like MoD I found it by searching for risk-like games on my school-issued crappy chromebook that blocks almost every game. As an autist, I find loopholes of course. I used my mega autism powers to bypass and figure out the password to the admin user and unblocked all of the games. God is great.

Naw, for real though, I became addicted to maps of any kind, geography, conquest, previous empires and the such (not history though). I have a short anecdote for my lack of knowledge of history; When I bought custom scenario, I made a 1939 diplo first. (I can't show the original one since it never started, but this one still has major errors: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=13781343 )
I just noticed abraxis was there too, and I used to say lel a lot. Oh boy, I miss those days. I can think we can all agree that real time was better during then, whether it was my autistic churning out of the same template over and over again, or it was someone/something else, it was than how it is today. R.I.P. Real Time. Anyway, I had a lot to learn about history (Doesn't mean I like it, I only like the shape/lands/empire of history, nothing else really, it just doesn't interest me much. I get that we're supposed to learn lessons from history, but I don't really need stories of old dudes that lived hundreds of years ago to have good morals.) Notice how germany doesn't own austria or czechia, and how poland isn't poland in 1939. <---autism speaking, I get obsessed with unconventional things such as dragons (when I was in elementary school), dinosaurs (when I was in middle school), and then in 8th grade I became obsessed with maps. I wanted to find a game that I could play that was like risk, and I found this. I've been playing ever since, and I churned out a fuckton of games during summer. Life was good. Back to school, real time is utter shite, not pointing fingers (hillary clinton, iriseyoufall, enderz), but it was probably because of certain players. I have steam, but no EU4, HoI, or any other games of that kind ((I don't have a job)). I love the community, I love the players, and I love this game.

Reddit. I built a similar game and in my thread, someone said people should play this instead.

I was annoyed at the time but now my game no longer exists and I'm still hooked on Warlight.

Risk addict. Used to play 6 player ffa alone against myself in my room. I rolled all the dice and made all the decisions. I used to write out a whole bunch of risk strategies in a notebook and gave each strategy acronyms, diagrams, and multi-paragraph descriptions.

People started wondering what was wrong with me so my parents bought me this risk disc that was supposed to let you play risk online against real people. I could never get it to work though because farmers aren't good at the Internets.

A few years later I found the disc and it reminded me all the good times I had alone in my room. So I typed "online risk" into google and eventually found warlight.
