As a Brazilian, i'd like to state that socialism and communism should die, and are so detrimental they shouldnt even be considered in a discussion like this.

I don't need to read a book

-even though im 23 i've paid enough taxes for unemplyed slackers to buy clothes and booze
-i've paid enough for extortionate gas, which was a must because the government thought *laughs* it was a good idea for them to take care of oil
-i've paid enough with health insurances, 500 bucks a month despite the absurd taxes on everything and i still get crappy service, still glad i didnt die on a waiting list
-i've paid enough for criminals such as rapists and murderers to be treated like poor victims of a "very cruel society"
-i've paid enough for our leaders to gift our money to dictatorships in Venezuela *laughs* and Cuba
-because i'm white i'll also have to pay enough to get a college degree

Could write a book honestly, can keep going with this while you get paid at least 7 dollars/hour enjoying unlimited internet and a free market

so yes, death to utopic, fanciful bearded redheads and long life to democracy and freedom

Democracy results in Communism and that is why Democracy should be destroyed.

I am agreeing with you on the free market, I disagree with your dichotomy. Democracy is Communism, Monarchy, Aristocracy, and nd limited republic is freedom and the free market.

Centrism is the best in my opinion. No need to go either extreme. Also obviously democracy is the most important factor, because otherwise we all could be butchered by officials for arbitary reasons.

Sp00ky Skeletonman, Why Does Nobody Know What a Fascist is?!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi818Ieypvo

John Green offers an entertaining overview of both Capitalism and Socialism as part of his Crash Course history series.

Sp00ky Skeletonman (that's Sp00ky not spoopy, ok man?) makes some salient points regarding a general lack of historical-literacy leading to the misuse of the word fascism.

Crash course history is full of oversimplification and lies by omission.

You'll never see a Crash course video talking about how Jews disproportionately supported Communism or how the Frankfurt school leftists took over public education.

Totally throwing the rise and fall of cultures etc. out the window for a second, and invoking Hoppe:

Democracy and socialism lead to rising social and institutional time-preferences; people that can produce more wealth end up with less wealth (because the state collects it). The result is a shrinking ability for those with the skills to build capital to invest long-term, and a decline in overall capital for everyone, since the capitalist can pay less workers, and the state has progressively less and less to collect from taxes. Technological progress slows, poverty increases, and IQ drops. Eventually civilization ends and humans revert to barbarism.

What was the status quo in the West prior to neoliberalism?

It varied.

In the United States it was liberalism, from the time of FDR until Walter Mondale lost the bid for President. Arguably this was true even during the administrations of Eisenhower and Nixon. Prior to that time the notions of Classical Liberalism held sway.

In Spain from the time of the Civil War 'till the death of Francisco Franco it was an anti-communist authoritarianism.

On the whole the West has been largely ruled by Democratic-Republics most of which are multiparty democracies dependent on coalitions to establish a government. This remains the case.

American Liberalism is an outgrowth or even a mere variety of Classical Liberalism in so far as one of the fathers of Liberalism was Thomas Paine who in his work the Rights of Man argued that access to health be regarded "as a matter of right."
