Note, an important thing to consider is that the Soviets only had 8000 to 12,000 casualties during Operation August Storm in Manchuria, where they faced a force of around a million Japanese soldiers and they had around 1.5 million. The Japanese had roughly the same number of men in Kyushu. While the geography would make a quick victory difficult, it wouldn't be a situation similar to the islands attacked earlier, as Kyushu is much larger, and has space for Japanese forces to keep retreating, instead of being forced into a corner where they have no choice but to fight. Note, Operation Olympic was not a plan to take all of Kyushu, but to take the southern portion to provide support to Operation Coronet, which would be an attack on Tokyo and the plains around it.
It is likely after Operation Olympic, the US could get Japan to go for the unconditional peace most of you folk want.

Well, it's a tough topic. The bombings were not needed, but they sure did cut the war by probably a year or Maybe even two. The Japanese were not gonna surrender and even after the carpet bomb campaign you would still need to send millions of Americans into what would have probably made D-day, Berlin, and Iwo Jima look like a tough baseball game. And delaying would have allowed the Russians to have a chance at occupying part of Japan. If that happened, Korea would have gone a completely different way and we might have had a Japanese Civil war.
I think the bombing in the end was probably worth it, but at a deadly cost. It simply came down to do we want millions of Japanese and Americans to die? Or just hundreds of thousands of Japanese?. The bombing actually probably saved millions of civilians who would have been forced to fight for their homeland and die in a land war.

Thing is that we could have accepted a number of peace treaties proposed to America by Japan. We could have probably came up with a better peace treaty than otl too, before Operation August Storm happened.
The main obstacle is the unconditional peace aspect of things. If we had ignored that, things could have ended better in Japan and Asia in general, with communism spreading slower, Japan less beaten up, and fewer Americans dead.

There are serious debate forums out there. You'd probably enjoy them for discussion more so than the warlight forums. It's likely more opinions would be changed as well.
I do agree that the bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not crucial in ending the war with Japan, but I believe they were effective in showing what the new superpower of the world was capable of, making the Soviets think twice about immediately engaging in direct conflict.
