To clarify, having school all year 'round should not be relevant. It is just to prevent people from saying "there's no school during summer." and stuff like that.

Here's my theory:

- Miller General Store is closed on July 19 (elderly couple takes Saturday off; they don't really need the money, they're just doing this so they can cope with their retirement).

- Mr. Ingel isn't the name of the principal.

The PA announcement is being made to catch someone, an impostor who doen't go to the school but somehow snuck in. Someone who's not from the same part of the country. That's why the announcer even bothered to put a name in there- because they wanted to catch someone who didn't know what had happened.

They'd encountered this imposter earlier, and he/she'd claimed to have shopped at the store on Saturday (when it's closed) so that's what tipped them off.

In the balance hangs the life of every student in the school.

An interesting theory. But I have two questions.

1) Why do you think the imposter snuck in after school?

2) Who then was on the announcer? The police, maybe?

This could actually work given what little information you have to go off of, but pay attention to the text when I edit it after 12:00am EST (about one hour from now). Now that I think about it, there is a way to phrase the riddle without having to change the date, but whatever.

1) The imposter doesn't know when school ends. They're using that place as a hideout.

2) The police or anyone else capable of capturing the imposter.

Oh, one more question. Why would the imposter obey the announcement?

They probably won't. The announcement was made as a last-ditch attempt before the SWAT team was brought in.

Since it would take a while to figure out (a while I unfortunately don't have- vacation in 4 days), is the date really just "yesterday"?

Yes. The original context of the riddle is that the day you hear the announcement, it is a weekday, as was the previous day, but I had trouble putting that into words without making it sound confusing.

What it is getting at is, why doesn't the person just say "yesterday?"

I will answer according to what the original source for this "riddle" claims is the answer, but yeah, I'll try to answer you.

I reckon:
mr. engel is a spy, who wants to kill you. He is in league with the principal as in the future you will become a major leader... so he has been sent back in time to kill you before hand...
