Alternatively, just go to his account page and click "+ Friend" to add him as a friend.

going to a player's account page knowing the name isn't possible atm, as far as i know

You can search them up as per usual, but you're correct in that ultimately the only way to directly get to a player page is by knowing/having their ID.
