ISIS no longer exists. They now call themselves ISIL which stands for the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant". They are Islamic extremists who seek to establish another caliphate with a Caliph as the leader.
There have been many Caliphates throughout history but never two at the same time. A Caliphate is very important to radical muslims. They believe that they need to restore the Caliphate (empire) of Islam through the use of religious and ethnic cleansing (shorthand for mass genocide) and broadcasting their bloodbath.
ISIS is an acceptable name, I think the most acceptable. The neutral name is IS or Islamic State, but they have no land in the Levant other than Syria (though they do have land in Libya).
