Simple answer no. You do need to "but in" to get coins.

Complex answer , yes. They can be achieved by special events, or winning an free to join coin tourney. For instance I have 12 coins from such a turnument. Also, when coins was introduce a lot of players was given 100 coins, to get it going. However you have to buy to get any real start.

If you're really good, these 100 can actually slowly grow into about 1k after some time, but that's risky. Just keep going bigger and bigger, just be aware it does take a while.

1,000 coins is only $10.00. Notice that Ruthless Bastard and Kryzchu are earning far more than that each season. So if you're really good, then it'll slowly grow into tens of thousands. ;)

The Coin ladder is kind of game-able in that it only counts the coins you gain and not the coins you lose. Not saying that you can be bad at the game and still win seasons (Krzychu and Ruthless Bastard, for example, are very skilled players most of us have no chance of beating) but if you win 80 coins and then lose 80 coins, it still helps on the coin ladder even though you didn't have a net gain of coins.
