Are Groups working?: 2025-09-08 20:17:46

Hello!

I have a whole group of players who like to play in a certain style of play, and we play reliably, we have fun, etc.

It seemed like a great opportunity for us to plan and organize games by forming a Group.

However, it doesn't seem to be really doing the job? Right?

Here was an earlier thread I started, with many people agreeing:

https://www.warzone.com/Forum/815513-groups-functionality

Things I would love for Groups to be able to do:

1. Notify players about invitations or new posts.

It seems like most of the people I invited aren't even aware they were invited! There's no email or notification or anything?

2. Allow people to be "passive" members.

Our Group has started "kicking out" members for not having "interacted" with the group. But maybe they just want to be part of some games, and to read the forum/chat. They seem to get kicked out pretty quick, as well! (A few months?)

At least it would be nice if the Group administrator received a warning ("Player X hasn't been active. Remove them from the Group?").

As it stands, players will need to join, get kicked out, then get invited again, and rejoin again every few months. That's not practical.

3. I'd love to be able to start games via Groups (what else would you use them for?).

Just start a game and invite [Group] - all the players get an invite.

Anyone know if this is all going as I'm describing it? Or am I using Groups wrong somehow?

A player gets removed from groups if they have been inactive on Warzone for 21 days. How active they are in the specific group itself doesn't matter.

Fizzer did that to prevent groups that go completely inactive from sticking around, since groups with 0 members get deleted.
That makes sense from an engineering perspective, but not so much from a player perspective.

However, I do think that the 3 week limit is currently too low.

The auto removing and eventual auto deleting of groups makes them unusable for anything that needs to maintain a history.

In fact, even just using an unstarted game will give you longer history since those stay up for 116 days before being auto deleted. And they also have a full message history instead of only the last 100 messages.

Groups are actually a nice concept, but its limitation so far is just a private global chat with private forums that I've rarely seen used.
The majority of groups I am in just serve as a way to refer people to the appropriate Discord server...

The limited number of groups you can be in is also an issue.
While in theory you can join up to 50 groups, in practice 7 is the most groups you can join to still be able to access it on the mobile app.

The latter is probably the most significant issue with groups so far, because it's simply preventing me from joining any new groups.

Yeah, a 21 day limit is too short. Thank you for filling me in on how that works!

Many people go on vacation for a few weeks, for example.

A few of us use our forum - it's been very handy - but no one else receives any kind of notification, so the others don't know we're chatting.

There's still no functionality to start games (or invite people to games) via the Groups?

No, groups are mostly just a clan-light at the moment.

People not getting any indication of unread messages on browsers is a known bug, and I hope Fizzer fixes that soon.

You could enable notifications for the forums by watching specific threads, which will send you a notification every time a new post gets posted.

There is currently nothing in groups (nor WZ in general) that invites a collection of people to a game where the first X to join can get in.

Perhaps try using Invite by Code and linking the game url into group chat is a way to get group games going at the moment?

please remember fizzer is only human and doing all this on his own.
whether that’s wise or not is not the issue here. enjoy groups, it’s a very recent development

Indeed.

I'm just commenting because it feels like Groups could/should be a functional replacement for what we do otherwise:

* Connect on some other medium altogether (challenging for some; often requires a new app or subscribing to another service).

* Start a "game" which never begins, just to function as an a organizational chat room.

It feels like Groups are the logical replacement for this, and - I presume - that's somewhat the goal.

However, the interface seems like it's just not working (for the reasons listed above; people either don't even get a notification that they've been invited, or join and then get booted if they don't play in any games for a few weeks).

I'm aware the Fizzer can only do so much, but it made me wonder if:

a) other people are having the same issues (and therefore we might vote on Uservoices or Feature Requests, or otherwise work together to highlight this),

and/or

b) I'm missing something about how Groups work, in which I'd like to learn.

Thanks for the feedback so far!

I suppose one option would be to reach out to the interested players elsewhere, ask them to join the Group, make sure they play in a game at least every three weeks, and enable notifications for a particular forum thread, where I can post updates. But that's a long process with many possible failure points!
