Basically what Thulk said. Some barbarian Algerians shot up some French, it's been the largest terrorist attack in France since 1961. It's a tragedy, but luckily not as bad as it could have been.

That is also terrorism. It doesn't make what happened in Paris any less awful though. We can deplore horrible acts without saying, "yes but this other act was worse". That's what torture apologists keep saying here in the US. "Waterboarding a few people isn't as bad as killing 3000 people." Fine that may be true, but it's irrelevant. One does not justify the other.

I mean, say you (Beren) insult me for being the head of a stupid, spamming clan. That doesn't give me the right to insult you for having a stupid name (your name is actually pretty cool).

yes the USA promotes funds and uses militants all over the world. I wish more Americans would speak up for truth and freedom. What do the majority of Americans want? Free and mostly equal trading partners across the globe. But our Political Heros are not working for that, altho that is exactly what they say they are doing. remember the phrase "Dobulespeak" from 1984

True. I feel sorry for every religious leader right now.

Sorry, you can't solve Islamic extremism by reaching out. Those Islamic leaders truly believe that they have a holy edict to kill the Christian leaders you suggest should reach out.

And a very, very disturbing percentage of Muslims are ok with that.

It's not PC to say anything other than 'only a very tiny minority of the Muslim population supports such acts', but research shows otherwise.

Show what research. Also, people may say that they're ok with it because they don't want to be killed for being an infidel.

Fuck this. Now people are starting to bomb mosques and attacking muslims in the street. Muslims who had nothing whatsoever to do with this. What's disgusting is that Charlie Hebdo, though they often made fun of radical islam, was strongly anti-racist and opposed all form of islamophobia. And now the death of their finest artists is leaving the door open to the popular persecution of a whole population of muslims who are as european as I am and just want to live in fucking peace.

Makes me want to cry and puke at the same time. This is our 9/11. And the consequences will sadly go against everything Charlie Hebdo is standing for.

I'm gonna go back to reading my old magazines and cry a lot.

Quite incredibly today, most writers, journalists and cartoonists here had the same opinion. Our friends died to make us laugh. We'll mourn their losses tomorrow. Today, for them, we HAVE to make fun of this, make fun of the dumbasses who did this, make fun of death itself. Today we laugh.

I'm going to try to give my slightly controversial opinion here.

First off, my condolences to the families of the killed journalists. Obviously the killing of anyone regardless of any circumstance is deplorable, and this was indeed a barbaric act, and should be condemned in the strongest manner.

However, I believe this satirist magazine has been making insulting cartoons depicting religious leaders, which brings me to my point.

Although in France you are entitled to speak your mind freely thanks to 'freedom of expression', you should still (always) exercise caution and tread lightly and remain polite in your opinions and with other people, especially when it comes to sensitive topics such as Religion. While many Christians in the West will not react in such an extreme manner because of an insult to Christianity, they cannot expect the same case for people in other areas, who are brought up under different religions, which have different practices, virtues and expectations, which deserves to be respected as well.

It is similar to going onto the streets, repeatedly insulting another person, then getting punched in the face. You can say that you were entitled to insult others because of your freedom of expression but I believe many would think that you deserved the attack simply because you were being rude in the first place.

This is also similar to 'The Interview' and the 'Sony hacks'. I find the movie deplorable, depicting a real, alive, controversial leader of the most unpredictable country on the planet, complete with his violent and fiery death, and then complaining when they retaliate because they don't like the movie.

Obviously punching someone or hacking computers compared to killing someone is completely different in scale. But I believe it is a similar scenario.

I'm not saying that these journalists deserved to be killed. My point is, I hope people will learn to understand that 'freedom of expression' is a right, it should be appreciated (since some countries still exercise censorship) and not abused.

Once again, my condolences to the families. If anyone believes that I am in the wrong, I am ready to be corrected.

I understand your opinion, and the horror and emotion of what just happened does make you think. And frankly I agree in general on the idea that provoking people and hurting their feelings, while it should never be forbidden, should be avoided by most journalists.

However Charlie Hebdo is not "most journals". Their creation as anti-establishment magazine is hard coded in their DNA. The goal of their journal is not to provide a "balanced and tactfull" humour. They shock, they insult, they make fun of everything and everyone, every religion, every massacre, everything. They had no limits, and that was who they were. Who they are, still. And their right to draw some incredibly dark and bordeline (over the line actually, well over it) cartoons is paramount. Voltaire said it better.

"I don't agree with your opinion, but I will fight to my last breath for your right to express it"

That's why we're all Charlie today.
