How is Single player not what you are suggesting? Templates that familiarise you with the mechanics of the game, at least in the beginning.

Eh, single player can be useful initially to get familiar with game mechanics, but playing against AI and playing against people is very different. It can be very intimidating if you play multiplayer and you keep losing and don't know why, and may be a disheartening experience, especially if the players you face are ones you don't realistically have much of a chance to beat with your current skill level, hence matchmaking could be a problem regardless.

No one here is "defending the system" - most of us will agree with you that matchmaking in pretty much all cases (QM, Ladders, CW) is sorely lacking. What we're opposing is saying that "getting wrecked by T3 b/c opponent has big stacks and I don't" is evidence of "cheating".

However ... SEAD is a game that depends heavily on luck wrt starts. That's what the game is. Most people hate it - except for SEAD where suddenly everyone loves it b/c (A) it's quick, (B) the "luck" factor means less skilled players now get the chance to beat more skilled players b/c of the starting luck.

Also make no mistake that even SEAD is not 100% luck; even with poor starts, you can still win b/c it's a matter of (a) can you outplay your opponent anyhow?, and (b) ascertain where you opponent is and where they will be defending/attacking? If not, then it will truly be luck where or not you can pull off (a) or not

For everyone else, there is SE1W which I personally prefer

If you actually want to improve in the game, join a clan, do some training; it's reasonably quick to go from "getting wrecked and I don't know why" to "decent player" (but you'll still get wrecked by the elite players, b/c they really are that good).

well, thought so. I am insta quitting any match with less than decent starts. I still lose, but at least I don't waste more of my time in a frustrating game experience.

You had 2nd order 1st turn, so you would be able to take North Africa before him. The position is bad salvagable if the enemy does enough mistakes; looking at the win rate and game count of the given opponent, that would most likely be the case.

Templates on Small Earth are usually luck based. There is nothing you can do about it, except play on different maps. However, Small Earth is a reasonably easy map to understand and a good way to learn how to play WZ.
