Well, you are unlucky to have bought the clan after that certain update to clans :/

Warzone Update 5.08, released 2021/02/01, permanently handicapped future clans by capping new ones entirely at 40 members, as part of the build-up to Clan Wars (with the rationale that Clan Wars has a 40 participant cap). It also lowered the clan price from ~$15 to ~$10.

If you have a clan created before 2021/02/01, you can Open the clan until you have 40 members but have no member cap otherwise.
If you have a clan created on or after 2021/02/01, you cannot have more than 40 members in that clan.

There is no secondary market for clans, so you're mostly out of luck.

You could support my Uservoice to fix this:

Can't like 100 members in the big clans help each other out in idle though? There's more to life then clan wars :'( that sucks, us neet gamers are the most oppressed race

Yes. I don't think that change made any sense.

Please vote for the uservoice to roll back to the last good Warzone version: https://warlight.uservoice.com/forums/77051-warzone-features/suggestions/44640579-roll-back-warlight-to-update-4-21-0

It’s possible to get 41 if the clan creator leaves the clan, has a 40th member join, then reclaims the clan.

But yeah, that is the cap for new clans

It was made to "increase the variety of clans".
Welp, probably the only two "successful" post-update clans are The Hodopian Dynasty and Excel.

Edit: dear moderators, could you please edit this post to contain as many swear words about the clan cap as possible without getting banned (a warning is alright)?.

The cap for example absolutely eliminates the possibility of making diplo clans, because having a ~40 player game entirely filled by your clan members is just... impossible with 40 player cap.

So why did we have the 40 member cap again?

But CW has its own limit, regardless of how many players are allowed in clans.

So that leaves only the reason of selling more clans. But if its about money, Fizzer could just sell clan expansion packs ($5 for an additional 25 members).

Yeah expansion packs would be a good idea. But hopefully he doesn't roll that out with a 40-cap on pre-5.08 clans.

Something like "boosting" clans with Membership would also be cool.

New clans hard-capped at 40 because they don't want massive clans like WL and TBA who has both more than 200 members.

This seems poorly thought out. Older clans have an advantage in clan wars due to this, even though only 40 people can participate, do you really think a clan with 200 members can't filter 40 active people for a season in a thread somewhere? This is what happens in the big clans, they're able to put on the roster active players and still leave other people in the clan. I can't do that. They also have more players to help out in idle and fulfill requests.

It looks like the only thing this is doing is punishing new clans.

The people with 3-5x more members then my clan can also judge based off last season's participation, wins and losses if the member should stay in the roster. They can easily pick a replacement. I can't do that. Why's it a bad thing if new clans are big? To make clan wars more active? But it hasn't worked... a lot of low level players would seemingly benefit from joining lesser-known clans (due to idle benefits) and it would most likely promote more user retention if low level players felt as if they had a community.

This all seems based around clan wars and it doesn't seem to have worked well. Very unfortunate update, hope one day it will get reversed as CW is somewhat dead anyways.

Do more than just hope. Vote: https://warlight.uservoice.com/forums/77051-warzone-features/suggestions/44640579-roll-back-warlight-to-update-4-21-0.

So that leaves only the reason of selling more clans

(This is estimated from 61 clans' creation dates and IDs.)

Also doesn't seem to have made much of a difference in terms of increasing clan sales. Since the COVID spike, the rate of clan purchases has stayed steady at about 1 clan every 4-6 days. There was maybe some benefit during the early months of CW but by now it seems to have stabilized. Given the price change, it needed to increase clan sales by 50% just to break even.

Here's # of clans by quarter:
2020Q1: 18 (398-415)
2020Q2: 23 (416-438) - UP 27.8% from last quarter
2020Q3: 26 (439-464) - UP 13.0% from last quarter
2020Q4: 18 (465-482) - DOWN 30.8% from last quarter
2021Q1: 42 (483-524) - UP 133.3% from last quarter; UP 133.3% from last year
2021Q2: 31 (525-555) - DOWN 26.2% from last quarter; UP 34.8% from last year
2021Q3: 17 (556-572) - DOWN 45.2% from last quarter; DOWN 34.6% from last year
2021Q4: 25 (573-597) - UP 47.1% from last quarter; UP 38.9% from last year

2021H2 (Q3+4) had 42 clans created, vs. 44 in 2020H2.

I'm not sure if the impact on clan creation, once it stabilizes, will be enough for even revenue-breakeven. As previously, I think the real goal with the Clans/CW changes has been to nudge Classic players toward Idle since that makes the most sense given what's actually been achieved and the incentives faced by an indie f2p dev with monetization built around a p2w side-game.

I know that I am a nit-picker, but wouldn't "clan purchase/ active player" make much more sense than just "clan purchase"?

Edit: Have you finally managed to do cubic splines? NICE!

We don't have a good way of estimating this historically, but I'd wager the active player population has remained roughly constant (within a factor of 1.5) in the last 2 years since the COVID boom.
