Dutch Desire isn't really a contender here. His win rates are inflated due to mostly playing weaker players, and he's not really part of the competitive strategic scene since he's shifted to diplomacy.
I'm guessing the 3 names AI is thinking of are: - Deadman (lots of accolades, also the mentor to a lot of today's great players) - master of desaster (trolled his way to #1 on the 1 v 1 Ladder) - Timinator (first/only player to have 100% on achievements)
I think people have also made cases for: - Rufus - Pardon - professor dead piggy - AI - szewenigen - Gui - Gnuffone - HHH - Buns157 - The Impaller
(with varying degrees of success)
My guess is that Deadman is most likely to be consensus pick.

Is Rufus (in place of mod) the 3rd?
The cases for the oldies (except maybe piggy) are all now very weak. Gnuffone's achievements are undermined drastically by his cheating, and the field faced by these players isn't as strong as the MDL top 5 today. But someone always chimes in to make a case for these players, outlining how they could still be competitive today.
For me, AI's short list (assuming Rufus, Timi, Deadman) seems spot-on with Pardon, Buns, mod, and AI right on the outside. There's surprisingly few real contenders for consensus GOAT; I thought it would be a very debatable thing, but it almost seems like Deadman is just the unambiguous #1.

I think you have to put in in the perspective of the competitive scene. Is The Impaller better than the top players today? Absolutely not. Was The Impaller better than anyone playing back then? Most likely. The same goes for Piggy, Gui, Sze, Latnox and (unfortunately) Gnuffone. During the time they played, they dominated. They all improved the strategic scene (albeit that one of those names improved cheating). Personally, I learnt from the four players I just listed, as well as some more modern players like MoD, MotD, Sephiroth, Timi and Buns. I think Deadman is the absolute GOAT of the current era, but that doesn't invalidate the others as innovators. It's hard to come up with an actual best player. I think that if we speak in terms of absolute skill instead of relative to the playerbase, it has to be Deadman.

i think farah is correct, to find the goat you have to compare the players to there own era, since every new player has adv´s that the previously did not have access to. And those are not the product of there own skill but of the tradition and advancement of the game over all. if you dont do it like this but instead in absolute strength, then you get absurd consequences as the below avg pro player in todays sports being better then the best player of an era if your going a sufficient amount of time back. So the best place to look would be at seasonal showings i think. top placements, mean and the like
