Coolbeans, clan boot statistics at the end?

I expect at least an r^2 test between placement and # of boots, using last CL's data for the model expected values. This will have invaluable value to the CL committee in determining whether or not to Outlaw boots for next season.

Today we have a small update with some big news.
I figured that since I can't really give in-depth reviews about the games, I'd ask the players themselves. In this update, you'll see what they think about the games, instead of someone who didn't play it. I'd like to thank the teams that responded, taking some time off my hands and giving more insights than i could provide.

Timinator immediately gets the income advantage on turn 2 by breaking Beren's Caria and grabbing West Central Greece under Beren's nose. Beren stacks towards the double border on West Central Greece, threatening Timi's income. But, Beren doesn't try breaking it; he opts for 5 safe income in North Aegean. The problem for Beren is that Timi didn't invest anything into defending West Central Greece, but grabs income too: North Arcadia. Timi is still ahead on income and is pushing Beren in Caria too. Now Beren has to survive in Caria and try to break West Central Greece. Timi predicts good and keeps his bonus. He does so again in the next turn. And the next turn. After that, Timi decides it's time to eliminate Beren from Caria and he succeeds at the cost of West Central Greece. But Timi also creates two new borders on Beren's income through Lesbos. From here, Timi can pressure Beren and he finishes it in two turns.

This is what AI's take on the game was:

"Both players generally prioritize the same picks of the board, 5 of 6 picks are equal and only the order is slightly different. Awesomeusername gets a nice counter on my turn-2-plus-3 bonus. Then, AI is stupid enough to take the critical territorry first order and wastes 2 extra armies. So after turn 2, awesomeusername was in a winning position.
AI blockades the lost bonus and manages to face both opponent bonuses while only being income behind. After a questionable blockade card of awesomeusername to protect one of his bonuses, AI has a lot of space to expand and slowly overtakes the opponent's income and gets the upper hand in the game. awesomeusername is trying to expand too to match the income but after AI manages to eliminate awesomeusername in one bonus, it's GG."

awesomeusername responds with this:

"With the exception of the early counter, I think the issue was that I wasn't ever really able to put pressure on his income, while he was threatening Azathia and Zarway at the same time. That's why my blockade was bad. Still, I definitely would have lost either Azathia or Shundi (and that would've meant a double border on Zarway) if I hadn't blockaded - even when AI was down on income, he had a pretty heavy stack advantage. Surprising me in Ulgor was a very strong move - I didn't expect him to have intel there. That's where the game was won, imo."

Here's 90's thoughts on the game:

(1) Another win by non-mirrored picks against mirrored picks. And this time I dont think people can blame the "bad picking and playing" of the opposing team. So this is evidence that if non-mirroring on EU is done right, it can be quite effective. [Here - non-mirroring ensured that Juan got 2 spots in Bulgaria and we tried to get zbd 2 spots in Eastern Balkans but that didnt succeed (but that is fine)]

(2) We prefered to pick the islands as (1) as opposed to denmark, because if we get first pick and lose both islands it could be disaster. In many ways, 2nd pick was the better pick on this distribution for that reason. For example, if we got 2nd pick and GG got 1st pick, then we would have gotten both islands AND england, so I think that we would have won on picks.

(3) There were 2 things that turned out really well for GG after picks: [1] They got the double-pick in finland, which allowed Polonius to try to get 11 income on turn 2. (Otherwise, my counter of ireland would have been much more effective since Polonius would have been on 5). [2] They had that beautiful counter to Portugal from France, and it went to the perfect player, the one who got a ftb in Denmark. Threatening Portugal almost put a spanner in our works - it was a great decision by them.

And Po1onius responded with:

1) We tried non-mirrored picks and it turned out badly. It was our only other loss. The approach Lynx took, mirroring the first 6 ( with one apparent minor error), and choosing pairs for 7-8, worked out well in the specific case of Bulgaria. The Bulgarian as a 7-8 was a winner because we, the opponents, valued it low. For the ones that we valued, you split, which was roughly even.

2) I agree that we did not put a high enough value on SW England. It would have been very important should we have lost both the NW islands, which was a danger, picking Denmark 1.

3) If we had first pick, we would have lost Ireland (giving Lynx safe NW islands), but we would have gained Kosice. This would have given us relatively safe expansion in the center. It would have been a different game, but not won on picks.

4) I am not sure I agree about the importance of our attack on Portugal. We spoiled Portugal on turn 3, resigned after 3 more turns. Devoting those troops in Eastern France and Switzerland might have turned the game.

4) Our position was dire at move 5. We needed to clean blue out of Switzerland. We guessed wrong.

5) Lynx’s collective move 6 is worth study. It is quite elegant. It sealed the win.

The scores now look as follows:


Yes, you see it right: Lynx took back first place. It's going through the eye of the needle this season. Although if you ask Masters, they're already celebrating the victory. The trashtalking has taken a new level (especially from Masters' side).

So let's talk about the scores. Only 3 games were completed since last week, but there are some interesting things going on:

• Lynx gains the most points this week, by winning a 3v3 against GG. They earn 5 points.
  
• Masters win a 1v1, adding 3 more points to their score.
  
• M'Hunters win a 1v1, netting them 3 points.
  
• ONE! loses a 1v1, costing them 3 max points.
  
• GG has a bad week, losing a 1v1 and a 3v3, resulting in -8 max points.
  
• Outlaws and VS have no completed games this week
  

The battle for gold
Lynx takes the lead on the scoreboard with 168 Max Points against Masters' 166. Masters, however, have 2 more total points than Lynx. It's down to the wire this season! The head-to-heads have not finished yet, but Xenophon had this to say about them: "Lynx is stalling".

The battle for Bronze
ONE! loses max points this week, resulting in their max points now being only 1 higher than Outlaws. They're 9 total points behind them too. Outlaws have 3 more games to finish, while ONE! has 5 left to do. This battle is also going down to the wire; way to go guys!

The battle against relegation
GG loses some really precious points here, losing a 3v3 and a head-to-head 1v1 against M'Hunters. Their Max Points drop to 111, while M'Hunters is already at 99 total points and has 6 games to complete. This battle is coming close to an end, with M'Hunters being more likely to take the upper hand, but it's not over yet.

Overall, the three finished games have a big impact on every clan participating (with the exception of VS).

Now then, story time.

While i was sitting behind my desk, just doing some work, my roommate came sprinting up the stairs.
"Some warlight guy sent you something" he said, and pulled up a rather big envelope with 5 stamps on it. The envelope was addressed to "Master Farah".
At this point, I had absolutely no clue who sent me something. I had given Xenophon my address two days before this, but sending something from Australia to the Netherlands in two days seemed like a stretch.
So i started opening the envelope. Another roommate joined the party and we were watching the insides reveal themselves. Something that looked like it was made of cotton appeared from the inside of the envelope. It was at this point i remembered. I took out the cotton and saw it was a piece of underwear. My roommates started laughing, asking why someone would send me underwear. And then i knew. This was MoD's underwear. And a sudden flashback occurred:

It was a tipsy night. Masters were celebrating they won Clan League and MoD was promoting his custom lingerie to us. Jz was stalking everyone as usual. Koopa and QB were playing Trivia.
"If someone orders them for me, I'll take a picture wearing them", i said with a tipsy state of mind. I didn't think any of it.

I turned around the white underpants. And there i saw it. "I love Masters, especially MoD", the text above the big golden M read.



So, i kept my end of the deal and took the picture. I won't post it on the forums so i can spare everyone who doesn't want to see some traumatic experiences. PM me if you really want to see it (i don't recommend it) and I'll decide if you're worthy.
Anyways, they are really comfortable underwear, so ask MoD for a copy asap. If the next Warlight Open happens, I expect everyone to show up in one of those.
