MoD wins the CL Elitist Africa tournament for the second consecutive year. Added to his seasonal ladder trophy won on this same template, he just deserves the title of Mansa Musa of Warzone.

Master of Desaster (Masters) defeats Cluster (MH)

A limited number of decent picks on the board, so Cluster and MoD have the same set of 13 first picks, with a slightly different order tough : MoD gives priority to isolated picks in exceptional lands, while Cluster hopes to get efficient combos in highlands, but those are soon under pressure. After two turns, Cluster has an income advantage of 14 vs 10, but MoD plays two perfect turns afterwards : giving up the fight around Madagascar allows him to take a better position in West Africa, while compelling Cluster to overcommit a few armies and inherit a negative income in the Comores islands. Then on turn 4, with equal income, MoD manages to outdelay Cluster (who, once again, might have overcommit elsewhere) and wipe him out of the Western High Plateaus. MoD is now ahead in income and Cluster prefers to surrender.

Gibson (VS) defeats AI (MH)

A 13-turn-long game with early fronts everywhere. Such games are often decided on predictions, and such a decisive one is made by Gibson on turn 8 : in spite of having the order priority (if he used the card like his opponent), Gibson lets AI flank his small slack before attacking it in the expected destination territory. I don’t really know if that last sentence makes sense but let’s just say this was a nice prediction that allows Gibson to clear a fertile and safe area in the south east. In the next turns AI fights like a Trojan but the positional and income disadvantage is too big and Gibson manages his risks perfectly.

Krzysztof (Outlaws) defeats timon92 (Lynx)

A frustrating game that finishes when it was about to become interesting : Timon chooses to pick a FTB around Impora that is risky (in the sense that the expansion is not great from there with a minimum of 3 turns to get the adjacent bonus); Chu neglects it and opts for picks in the big south-eastern bonus. Their third picks are close to each other in the west, but Timon early income advantage isn’t big enough to try an elimination. At the end of turn 4, both players have finished expanding and the income is 14-12 in favour of Krzyzstof. BUT, Timon has a sure opportunity to offer himself a nice double border on next turn with order priority, if he has managed to figure out where his opponent is (and I have no doubt he has). Nice, let’s press the play button to see how this game evolves. Oups, coitus interruptus, Timon boots.

Pardon99 (Masters) defeats Krzysztof (Outlaws)

Let’s skip the first 6 turns : the respective picks are far away and the expansion race goes as you may expected from such players. At the beginning of turn 7, Krzyzstof has a small income advantage (24-21), and two fronts are open while Pardon is not finished with his expansion in the big (worth 6) Bargium bonus. A bonus that he will not complete, as Chu nicely manages to counter him while sliding to offer himself another front. On turn 8 though, Pardon makes the perfect prediction and outdelay his opponent to complete a 4 bonus and .. eventually take that crucial Bargium bonus. Pardon is now ahead in income (28-23) and has two stacks at the door of 2 of Kzryzstof bonuses. Pardon commits his armies at the center of the game and creates himself new opportunities, while Chu deploys at the periphery to break bonus that are not that crucial. On turn 10, Pardon forces entry into Chu’s infantry in the center and the white flag is raised.

Krzysztof (Outlaws) defeats AI (MH)

When you have significant safe income and a nice stack in the middle of your opponents bonuses, being slightly behind in income is normally not an issue. Provided you make sure you maintain a presence in the disputed areas. Well, that was an issue for AI who let Krzysztof clear him from the north and slowly lost the tough fight that took place in the east. That could be a game to watch for whoever surrenders once the games seems to go in the wrong direction : good predictions (and delay management) can do miracles !

Awesomeusername (GG) defeats FiveStarGeneral (ONE!)

Speaking about miracles ! Three days later, I am still wondering how aun managed to do that. Yet another lesson for all of us noobs :
On picks, he opts for that Impora FTB (again: it’s nice to have early income but the adjacent bonus is so long to take). FSG picks the perfect counterstrategy with enough big bonus (and intel on his way) and the good little counter at the right time (turn 4 : told you that bonus was long to take..). At the beginning of turn 5, FSG leads with 19 to 11 incomes. aun expands in safe bonus in the west but is under pressure in two of his small bonus, while FSG has just to manage comfortably his advance in income to grab a nice victory. But Warzone is a strategy game and all the techniques are good to win the psychological warfare. And there comes the masterpiece : we will probably never know what was said in the private chat, but at this point, awesomeusername manages to convince FSG that ONE! also had to give away free points; that boots, non-joins and accidental surrenders are the very essence of Clan League, what keeps it fun, and balanced.
FSG agrees and simply surrenders.



1v1 Strategic Greece

MIFRAN (GG) defeats hobo (MH)

I am not sure what hobo intended to do on the first turn of this game, but it certainly failed (a weird 2v2 attack in the east). Mifran gets a 4-FTB and is ahead with 11-8 in income, and can then crush his opponent bonus everywhere.

MIFRAN (GG) defeats PJ (ONE!)

PJ neglects the safe and central FTB in the Sporades islands at the benefit of Macedonia in the North, which requires more time and deployment, and is vulnerable if Chaldecice is not wastelanded. So PJ is behind in income from the start, and MIFRAN just has to count to deduce PJ’s location and show up on turn 3 at the doors of Chaldecice. Since breaking a double-border is not an issue for the Swedish Periclès, the game is over.


Timon (Lynx) defeats Edge (Outlaws)

A nice game between two of the tournament favourites : Edge cluster picks around the southwestern FTB in Sparta and comboes with a pick in the Ikaria island to hope to take the big and relatively safe South Cyclades bonus. The move order luck is with him as well since he manages to tap (with 3) and deny Timon’s completion of the 4-FTB Thebean League. But Timon has also expanded in small bonuses in the east, and understanding Edge has to invest to complete South Cyclades, he secures the east on turn 2 and is now threatening Edge’s big income. In the two following turns, Timon profits from his tiny income advance (14 vs 13) to hammer South Cyclades, a tactic that works even better when your opponent deploys precious armies in the adjacent territories to play the delay game. When he knows his bonus will eventually break, Edge has to invest to take another safer bonus, but he comes out of that turn 5 with less income and less armies on the board. In the last turn, Timon just has to defend his double border without taking any risk.

1v1 Pangea Ultima

Malakkan (ONE!) defeats Emu Pub (MH)

A confession first : I might bear some responsibility for the fact that Pangea Ultima was selected in that Clan League. And I start to regret to have made use of all my skills in rhetoric to convince my clanmates to vote that template first (comprehensive verbatim from the clan discord server : “It’s fun”).
Fun it is indeed. But I realise it is also an even worse pick lottery that SR MME; any single set of picks being vulnerable if your opponent choose another strategy, and accidently getting intel is just a game winner.

Anyway, let’s look at this game. Warning : luck haters will hate it.

Both players have coverage in the three important regions, and the only intel they have is their bordering territories in the east. However, Emu Pub picked big bonuses while Malakkan opted for smaller one. It is no real surprise (well, unless you don’t know that your opponent chose big bonuses) that Emu Pub tries to go for a smash and elimination in the bordering territory. In this template, such move on turn 1 is pretty risky : the minimax move is obviously to deploy 3 in the adjacent territory and take a card piece elsewhere, to make sure to have the reinforcement card while facing a small 20% odd to get eliminated. Well, Malakkan gambled, I don’t know why, we should ask him, and got punished for that.
Then Emu Pub can freely expand in the east while starting to harass Malakkan around his bonus in the West. The latter has to invest some precious income to go across a wastelanded bonus and reach Emu’s income. On turn 8, surprise, Emu Pub was hiding in that 5-bonus in the north at the door of Malakkan’s other bonus and completes it. The situation is critical : 19 vs 13 incomes (even though Malakkan kept his reinforcement card); two challenged bonus by Emu Pub and a double-border for Malakkan. The game is normally over, but Emu Pub plays just a bit too greedy that last turn, trying to take a big 6 bonus with three 3vs2 (among which one fails), gets outdelayed and is unlucky in his defense of his double-border. He could also have used a blockade in the west to make Malakkan’s stack there irrelevant. The definition of a nightmarish turn. Or the joys of Weighted Random miracles, depending on your perspective.

Malakkan (ONE!) defeats Master Shinrah (Masters)

After picks, Malakkan has intel on one of Shinrah’s start and hopes to counter his opponent in two turns. But Rufus is too smart and that move counters nothing. Despite an aggressive counter-attacks, the income remains slightly in Malakkan’s favor (14v12), with less armies on the board though. On turn 6, a little bit of arithmetics allows Mallakkan to prevent Shinrah from completing a crucial bonus and a tricky guess/delay game follows. Malakkan manages to slowly decrease the army disadvantage and eventually get a slightly better position, where a conservative play should ensure him a win.

Rocky (VS) defeats Njord (Outlaws)

In the first game above, picking in big bonus should have made Emu Pub win the game. In this game, you may look why this strategy is obviously risky : Njord comboes in two big (worth 5 and 6) bonuses in the east, and picks another 5-bonus in the north, while Rocky has spread his picks among the smallest bonuses. Watch out Njord, one of them is just around the corner. A brawl follows in the east but Rocky gets a decisive advantage with the control of a chokepoint in another area of the map. By blockading it, he releases the pressure and can start reexpanding. Both players have to travel quite a bit to threaten their opponent while keeping playing their brawl in the east and it remains pretty balanced, but Blockade cards are coming quickly in this template and Rocky wisely uses another one to make sure all of his income pocket is safe. Since at the same time, he has reached and broken a big northern bonus, there is no more hope for the crazy viking.

Rento (Lynx) defeats Rocky (VS)

I wouldn’t have liked to be Rocky after turn 1 in this game : his coverage on picks is not optimum and he inherits a combo around a central 3-bonus, as well as another 3-bonus not that far away. So when he realise that his opponent has picked in a double-border just where he had started to expand (and which is also only two territories away from his last pick), he must have thought that the game was starting poorly. Instead of trying to eliminate that annoying spots (which would have likely failed by the way), he chooses to complete another 3-bonus. Ouch, I wouldn’t have liked to be Rocky after turn 2 either , since it turns out Rento has just completed the 4-bonus with a double border on this bonus. Rocky tries to hammer that border but Rento knows out to count and doesn’t take any risk. The game is over.

Njord (Outlaws) defeats Emu Pub (MH)

In this game, Emu Pub’s excessive prudence costs him the game in 6 turns.
When they face each other after two turns, Njord and Emu Pub have respectively completed a 5 and a 4 bonus. Emu Pub decides to stack on the front, while Njord, whose bonus is not under direct threat can complete another bonus. On turn 4, Emu Pub catches up and income is back to 15-14, but he still doesn’t dare to attack his opponent the following turn. Which lets Njord complete another bonus. Despite having a lower income Emu Pub eventually decides to attack but he doesn’t use the OD card, and his opponent can counter-smash him. With more income, more armies on the board and a card piece advance, Njord wins the game.




2v2 Final Earth

MIFRAN and Ko (GG) defeat Rocky and Vicnus (VS)

Rocky and Vicnus mirror their first three picks in South America and monopolise that nice and safe area. But that also means that their coverage of the map is not as good as GG’s team. Though the latter soon see Ko a bit under pressure, having two fronts to handle in North America and in the disputed chokepoint of St Helena between Africa and South America. By blockading in North America, Ko releases the duress and successfully wins his dispute over Napoleon last home. But Vicnus has no worry to defend South America, being ahead in income : all the GG’s caravel sink off Pernambuco, and soon Vicnus can launch a counter-attack. In the meantime, Mifran has expanded like crazy in Siberia, Africa and Oceania (with a peak income of 27) and can start threatening his opponents by crossing the Beiring Strait and smashing any resistance in Polynesia. At this point, he doesn’t really care to lose a few bonus in Africa or Oceania : all he wants is to reduce his opponents’ income down to zero. He just needs 2 turns to do so.



2v2 Szeurope



Games finished since last update :

Buns and Nackickwind (VS) defeat Timinator and Xenophon (Masters)

Both teams have shared the combos accross the board with Masters owning scandinavia and the Baltic states, and VS being alone in the Iberic peninsula and Russia. VS can combo around Austria but Timinator is not far away in Eastern Balkans and Xenophon quiet in Benelux. However, Timinator’s pick are safer and Xenophon is more exposed, while VS starting spots are remarkably balanced. After three turns of expansion, the first fight can start, but Xenophon has not less than 3 fronts to deal with, while Timinator is too far to be a serious threat. That allows Buns to quickly complete Spain while Nack destroys Xeno in the east (Finland) and west (Ireland). At the end of turn of turn 8, VS has a bit more income globally (28 vs 26), but it is much more balanced among his players; while at this point Xenophon is just here to make up the numbers. So Buns and Nack can choose to jointly focus on Russia to eventually break in Scandinavia. Congrats Turtles !

Juan and 90 (Lynx) defeat Buns and Nackickwind (VS)

This game is a collector since you can witness Buns getting eliminated in 6 turns. When the lynx is hungry, it is not an old icelandic shell that will prevent him from ingesting some precious calories.
To be fair, Buns put himself on the back alone in this game, with a fail gamble on turn 2, when he decides to take Norway without knowing whether Denmark has been picked by his opponents and get countered; and felt comfortable enough to attack his teammate to take in charge the Russian front in the same turn. So at the end of this turn, Buns has no bonus, and three fronts open. Oups. The lynxes will happily focus on him while keeping Nack busy in the center from the crucial control tower of Lower Austria.

FiveStarGeneral and Memele (ONE!) defeat Odin and Platinum (Outlaws)

Poor Plat : not a single safe bonus where he can expand at the beginning of the game. And when he chooses to focus on Russia to pay a visit to Memele in WCR, he seems to waver between a temptation to smash him and his duty to prevent ONE! from completing Finland. Eventually, he does neither of those and elegantly moves his stack between Leningrad and Vologda for three turns. Which is enough to let FiveStar complete Eastern Balkans and Memele fight a 1v1 against Odin around Lower Austria. FiveStar can then clear the north while helping his teammate to break lower Austria and, from there, Odin’s Czech Republic. I am sure Platinum can be as persuasive as awesomeusername, but Memele must not be as accommodating since he manages to convince his clanmate not to surrender.

Buns and Nackickwind (VS) defeat Platinum and Odin (Outlaws)

This time Platinum has some room to expand since he has clusterpicked Eastern Balkans. And with the help from his teammate, Odin thinks he can complete two bonuses worth a total of +5 in two turns (which, I think, is the maximum you can get). What he doesn’t expect is that Nack has picked in Norway and counters Lapland with 3 (a counter that Odin could have easily outdelayed if he had been more cautious). The game turning point : from there Nack will have no trouble holding Lapland for the next turns thanks to his bonus in the center while Buns gets additional income and gets a path towards Eastern Balkans.

In a curious symetry of strategies, VS players combo in negative income bonuses, while Outlaws go in the safe cities, oily and farm lands. Vs forgets to play the sanction card on turn 3 (maybe for lack of intel about who got what among their opponents - a pretty bad idea anyway). Outlaws have rushed to meet their enemies and wisely sanction Vicnus who is the richest person on the board at that time. They also smartly balance the board thanks to gift cards and manage to create enough disequilibriums to slowly gain an income advantage without really being threatened.




3v3 Europe

Mike, MisterT and Po1onus (GG) defeat DarrenDieHard, INSIDE and tobbe (VS)

In Yalta, GG and VS met and decided to let the control of Russia and Scandinavia to the former, while VS would start in a big Austro-Hungarian empire stretching from Geneva to Bulgaria. The issue for VS was that they entrusted the buffer states in Belarus, Ireland and Benelux to the care of a single player : Darren. And they didn’t even give him a safe bonus in the heart of their empire. So as soon as they feel strong enough, GG players launch their troops accross the borders without any problem. Mike coming from the east gets around INSIDE’s stack and rushes to control the crucial Lutsk. MikeT organises a landing from Douvres and sneaks a path through Belgium and Germany with an increasingly powerful stack to the capital of the empire in Vienna. INSIDE desperate Russian Campaign fails shortly after crossing the Berezina and he is the first to surrender.

Juan, Dom365 and 90 (Lynx) defeat blobblob, Melethron and AI (MH)

While Dom and 90 classically mirror, Juan pretends to be the new Byron and helps the greek partisans to complete their country independence in 2 turns. He then romanticly helps his fellow Dom to get Bulgarian unity in the following turn. With such powerful and safe bonuses, Lynx can start messing around in Russia and in the center. Melenthron wastes a significant energy attempting to complete France but Juan doesn’t allow him to do so. 90 creates an heroic pocket of resistance in Ireland and manages to export his revolutionary ideas to the highlands of Scotland, and from there to Norway. In the meantime, Eastern Balkans and Hungary have felt under the charm of Juan’s poems and the income is too unbalanced for the game to continue.



Current standings :


Lynx have a 4-1 victory ratio and score 15 points since the last update. They reinforce their lead on this division, with a comfortable buffer in % of contested points. Unless they completely mishandle their 3v3 matchups, we might well get our winners here. But there are still a ton of points to share.

Masters had only 1 win in the last three weeks for two defeats. With 65,7 %PC, they dangerously let GG come closer. Which will obviously please the latter, but also Platinum.

GG had a remarkable performance of 5-1, among which 2 direct wins against their direct competitor for a place on the podium.

ONE! have a decent 3-2 performance and seem to be comfortably sitting in the 4th place

Outlaws have finished a lot of game for a balanced result of 4-5. They have managed to exit the relegation zone, despite the efforts of their leader to keep them under pressure.

MH replace them with a pretty bad performance of 6 loss for 1 win.

VS have seen worse periods with a balanced 4-6 performance, thanks notably to the help of their Turtles reinforcement. They have yet to win a 3v3 game to finish their warm-up.

Can you explain? Are you part of the new ethic committee that decided losing the game just isn't enough and a further punishment for FSG is required for giving away a free win? Did any other clan receive a deduction of points for surrendering a game? ;) Some clans should be < 0 if we calculated losses like that.
