Remember the days, when there were no search-engine - only bibliographies, indexes and cross-references ... way back to annals? No, you don´t! And now when we have highly functioning user-friendly search-engine, where ones ability to use it is pretty much non-existent.
Give a man a fish, he will starve on the next day. Give a man a tool, he will forget why he needed it in the first place.
seems there is high demand for an official warlight discord server. maybe Fizzer should add the chat menu again, this time pointing to one of the discord servers listed? i think discord.me/warlight is the most popular overall?
@ps: That's a solid idea if I've ever seen one. Put up that link, a redirect, and a disclaimer that WL is not responsible for the contents of that third-party Discord channel, and he should be good. Although the channel is mostly regulars now who get a bit ticked off every time a new person joins- and it's not very efficient at handling new accounts due to the whole verification thing.
Before such a move is made, we would need to find a good way to do it. (As knyte talks about)
Right now, plenty of people who are on Discord is not in the "official" one. Mostly because they just find it annoying. I don't know what they best way to do it would be, but balancing anti-NSFW spam and accessibility is hard. The best might be to make a server where all "fancy stuff" is stripped, so no embedded link's etc. Then also have it give no notifications? But this has clear drawbacks. You can do some bot moderation too, but, well the first experiment with that was hardly a success.
Also, yes, discord.me/warlight has most accounts in it.
Well the Forums prove the point: Spam-proned, off-topic shadows the general section. I don´t think Discord will be any different?
@ps and Knyte (and anyone else who has been here long enough to know) - Were there and IRC for warlight, or are there now, even privates if their purpose is to keep it work-safe.
the biggest problem imho with the irc embed that warlight had for a few years back was that ppl didn't use it much. there was only 5 or 6 people when i checked it, and mostly no chat, and since it's irc, no historic of chat either.
so people mostly used game chats to communicate between different groups (create games that never start and everyone just chats there).
WGL was what made warlighters use skype more afaik.
game chat rooms have finally started being deprecated due largely to the new messaging system, and now on the past year or so discord has been getting more popular for warlight for some reason.
i'm not much of a discord user, but from what i seen you can create your own chat rooms at will which only some members can access, so it's perfect to keep an official channel controlled by the usual mods of the usual forum divisions. and whoever doesn't like censorship can just create their own channels and invite ppl to join there.
