What to do with Benelux.: 11/23/2011 20:33:05

I'm making a map of Benelux by communes, and on some points it gets really crowded. You can see that on my Luxembourg map, that's the same scale as my Benelux map, since I cut it out as soon as I was done with it. On some communes in the Netherlands and Belgium it has even smaller territories, and I can't make it larger, since you can only make maps maximum 1600*3300 pixels. There is a way to make it bigger, but that's by turning it 90 degrees clockwise, so north is right and south is left. But other people I've asked about it don't like it, so I ask you, is it worth it to turn the map?

Still, anyone have any suggestions??? I really want to finish this map, it'll have over 1100 territories!

Moros, where do you get those pixel limits? I just made public a tall map (1500 high, 1100 wide) so out of curiosity, I expanded the map to 2000 by 1500 and uploaded it with no issue.

I tried to go larger and it did finally give me an error... "The maximum size is 3330 wide and 2400 high"

Hope the new limits help.

Sounds like a massive map is coming up.
Moros, did you perchance ask about including pictures the other day because you wanted to use the *Leo Belgica*?
Is this map going to have 1,000+ territories? That would be awesome!

---

By the way, I'm working on a restauration of *The Netherlands*. I've allotted all the municipalities to their real province, so Utrecht won't look like an ugly blot anymore.
I hope to start testing this map this week, and if it turns out it needn't be changed, I'll make it public the Fifth of December. How's that for a Saint Nicholas present?

*Only Moros and other Dutchmen get this.*

Nope, never heard of the Leo Belgicus before, I looked it up on Wikipedia and I don't think I can include such a large object in my map, I want to make it real-life, as it is today, with the second Maasvlakte and Flevoland and more of those lands. I was thinking of these:

If you know any better images, show me please.
Btw, already done with Luxembourg, Brussels, the province around Brussels, Antwerp and Rotterdam.

I can't wait to start making 24 player games on this map :) Big new york and big US are getting a bit repetitive.

Thanks, altough it'll be a copy of the Netherlands map for about 3/8... Okay, not really a copy, I want to make it a bit more life-like, the Netherlands map was probably from an svg from the internet, and not hand-made because you can see the borders are a bit boxy sometimes.
I want to make my map more realistic, here's a picture of Rotterdam I've made myself:

And here's the variant already online:

I did the same with Antwerp.

Ok, now I see this map compared to the other one, I see I made some border mistakes with the commune Maassluis, but I'll fix that later. What do you think for so far?

I give you a LOT of credit Moros... putting that level of detail in a map is no easy task. How are you putting it in? Just hand-done with the bezier or with one of the automated methods in Inkscape?

Nope, just by hand :)
And I'm also putting the Caribbean Netherlands in, I'll connect them to Antwerp and Rotterdam, the largest ports.

Impressive. The Massachusetts map I showed you was my first and I traced it by hand... LOT of work. And that was ignoring rivers and bays and harbors etc. that would greatly increase the outline of the territories.

Sadly, mine looks more like the second image that you disparaged...

Oh, the details are mostly in the coastal area´s, I´m putting less attention to the commune borders, except for making the overlap perfectly of course. I still have one more map to finish, it just needs some minor tweaking and then it´s ready to be released. It´ll be a bit like the Mr. T map. After that, I expect this map to be done by 2012.

Moros great map :) I would suggest putting ports along the coast, or eveb airports in major cities for this map to be able to connect from one to the other end fairly fast :) would make teamgames very focused around certain areas and would make your territories a lot harder to defend.

@Typhoon:
That's a very nice idea. I've always thought airlift cards are a bit of a hack; connecting airports together is a much nicer solution in my opinion (with the added benefit the AI can use those connections as well). It should go a long way towards solving the issue (on large maps) of armies being "stuck" on one end of the map that will never make it to the front lines again because they're dozens of moves away.

@Moros:
You're both crazy (for trying to make huge maps like Canada Big and this Benelux Big one) and brilliant (for not just trying, but actually pulling it off). If there's ever an award for map-making, I think you shouldn't be allowed to enter; that'd be too unfair to all the other artists. ;) [We could name the award after you though, "Moros Map-Making Award" sounds pretty cool!]

Well, where is it?

And the rest, thanks for all the support, if anyone could give me a list of all mayor airports and ports in the Benelux, I'd be happy. Oh, and just done with De Biesbosch, look it up, it has a very nice coast to work with :) Btw, I'm putting aside the other map I was working with, now only this map to concentrate on...
