Not if the outcome is loss. Right now lack of activity (booting) has consequence of kicking out of league. You can stop the tournament by a game or two, but three or more games (and you are booted) can push you to relegation just because you have negative points. As I see this series of tournaments, booting is less desirable than ordinary loss, because, if two have the same outcome, booted player is always after players with ordinary losses.

However, if this is not the case, I recommend that booted one should have negative points.

Potential Rule Changes

Thanks Hasdrubal. Negative points for a boot loss looks like a really good idea. I would actually consider implementing this next season if people show support for the idea. Hopefully it would encourage people to at least surrender their games rather than get booted.

I would award -0.5 points per boot loss, but still award 1 point for a boot win. Also, an inactive player would be defined as a player who finishes the season with a negative point score rather than a player with more than a 50% boot rate. This would give players who accidentally booted in a few games a chance to still participate in the next season without having to re-join at the bottom.

  • Edit: My main issue with this rule change is that I would have to check the result of every single game to ensure it wasn't a boot.

As to the idea of awarding both players with a loss if a game takes too long, I won't consider implementing that. However, I propose a rule to set a maximum of 3 vacations per season, with any player exceeding this automatically receiving a relegation.

Wise decision. otherwise you could end up punishing players that play <1 day average per turn

Timinator, idea is just tossed to solve current situation. If people don't think they can play one season, it is fair to consider to rejoin next season, rather than delaying the current one or to frustrate other players.

This is not ladder where player can quit tournament and join when he finds it appropriate.

Group A: In Progress
Arkanton (6-2)
huddyj (6-2)
Buns157 (5-1)
PanagiotisTheGreekFreak (5-3)
Master Bjarke (3-3)
iNsAnE (3-4)
PhucilliJerry (2-3)
Super Smoove (0-5)
Bonsai (0-7)

Well well, what have we here? Finally some progress in Group A! After 4 vacations in a row, Super Smoove boots from all 5 of his active games. At minimum, he's entrenched in relegation territory. More likely he'll be leaving the league, with a more than 50% boot rate.

(His only chance to avoid this is to have a reasonable excuse and play out his remaining games--another reason why I think the previously mentioned rule change is a good idea, as it saves me having to decide what constitutes a 'valid excuse'.)

Buns also gets a gutsy win over iNsAnE in a very tight game, significantly improving his chances of winning the league. All Buns needs to do is win his last 2 games, but 1 loss and we'll have a 3-way tie for top spot (which Buns will most likely win on tie-breakers), and 2 losses giving Arkanton back to back titles due to his head-to-head win over me. My only chance to win comes down to a tie-breaker tournament, which will only happen if Buns loses to PJ, and PJ wins all of his remaining games. This will force an unbreakable tie for first, but unfortunately I don't think it's very likely.

This is interesting... If japan beats me, he can still win double promotion, but if I beat him, he can drop remaining game as well.

all these delays over excessive vacations make me wonder why we honor vacations at all.
The league could run a LOT faster without them and hey.. i go on vacation and lose all my games through boot.... so what? It's not exactly the end of the world.

I would suggest changing to no vacation honoring and just don't throw anyone out of league for booting, just let them slide down a division

If and when players boot out of games in the lowest division, then replace them

Dunno if I like that approach. Once in a while I have a week when I really can't play. It would be a pity that I would be punished for that. I almost never join things where vacations are not honored, and I definitely wouldn't participate in this if they aren't. I think the option of more games at a time is the most appealing if you need to speed things up

indibob, a large number of our current players are only playing because vacations are honoured, and I think this is reasonable, as even with a 3-day boot time, there are good reasons why people may need to be away from warlight for longer than 3 days. I will therefore continue to allow players to take vacations as needed.

Normally, it's not vacations that extend a season, but players who play slowly. The only reason vacations are an issue this time is because a couple of players have each taken 4 vacations in the one season. This is why I'm proposing a maximum of 3 vacations per season, with an auto-relegation for anyone exceeding that number.

As for allowing players who continually get booted to remain in the league, I don't think this is a good idea. An inactive player just means one less spot is available for promotions from lower groups. I'd rather kick the inactive player and promote someone who is active from a lower group. This keeps the league alive, and I think all players would prefer their wins coming through having to outplay their opponent rather than wait for the boot timer to expire.

Super Smoove boots in his final 3 matches, and will be removed from the league for his inactivvity. This leaves only 3 games to be played, each involving PhucilliJerry. Should he win all 3, there will be an unbreakable tie for first between Arkanton, Buns, and myself. However, from my reckoning, any loss by PJ (even if he beats Buns) will give Buns the League Champion title due to tie-breaks.
