Yes, Warlight is a Flash game!

An easy way to check that is to open up a random game and right-click anywhere on the map: the menu will offer you the option to change Adobe Flash's parameters.

It's a Flash web game written in a cross-platform toolkit called Haxe, so it's not purely Flash.

It's Flash, for now. There are plans to rename the game Warzone and dispose of Flash because it is largely obsolete technology that is being phased out.

@Talking Fan: it's not written in Flash, but it's compiled to Flash. It's kind of like how Python is compiled to C. We don't say a Python program's a C program because of that.

On the user's end, we still experience it as a Flash program (i.e., if you have Spotify running on a different tab, enjoy checking History in your diplos), but calling it simply a Flash game hides the fact that it's not quite as hard to shift to HTML5 or implement it as an Android app. If the Warlight client were written in Flash, you'd have to basically rewrite everything to port to HTML5; but it's in Haxe and that means you can retain a lot of the original code.

That's not Java, that's bytecode.

Why can't it just be written in HTML5? Would it look different? I never heard of Haxe. Is it like some sort of catch-all code?

@Ryan: https://haxe.org/

I haven't worked with Haxe much and pretty much only know about it because of Warlight, but it basically lets you write programs in Haxe and then convert the same program into different Python, C++, Flash, Android, HTML5, etc., apps. So basically makes it a lot easier (but not necessarily easy) to finish things fast.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haxe

Haxe is a programming language, its compiler can then compile said code into a variety of other languages. The reason you'd use it rather than one of the languages it can be compiled and turned into is primarily portability. A lot of portable devices don't support flash for example.

EDIT: I am apparently slow, or I just really wanted to be redundant today. But yeah, knyte and I largely said the same thing.

The post before that was just me being a smartass in reference to knyte's python vs. c comparison.

It's like this old Java slogan, except now with multiple languages instead of multiple platforms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write_once,_run_anywhere

Haxe as far as I am aware (not actually used it), hasn't led to any WODE jokes though. (I absolutely hate Java.)

In terms of not working without a flash browser plugin, it is.

In terms of comparison with other flash games, it certainly is different. Not a bunch of them on one page, accounts, etc...

So does Fizzer code just with Haxe, or is there an IDE which utilises Haxe? Thanks

I can't tell you details, but it's compatible with most of the major IDEs. You'd still have to code in Haxe, though, regardless of whether you're using an IDE or just vim like a sane, well-adjusted, competent person.

Do we have any new details on that? I remember a lot of the player base getting pissy about the name change and I could have sworn it was supposed to have been implemented by now...
