@Prussian Monarchist: The term libertarian was actually coined by socialists to refer to a subset of socialism that disagreed with Leninism and opposed any form of dictatorship or state control over the means of production. Modern right-wing libertarians (the capitalist kind) consciously stole the term, and it's well documented.

The term was originally used as a synonym for anarchism (the leftist ideology that opposes both the state and corporations) and then consciously redefined by people like Rothbard to refer to their own ideology.

Leftist isn't the same as liberal (e.g., leaning toward the US Democratic Party) but more along the lines of socialism and supporting some form of worker control over the means of production. America tends to conflate modern liberalism/social liberalism with "The Left," socialism, and communism since there isn't much of an actual Left in the country.
