Ugh. So many people being intentionally difficult. Nobody thinks that the U.S represents a whole continent. When we say "America" we are referring to just the U.S.

Are citizens of the U.S not allowed to call themselves Americans either? What are we then? United Statists? That sounds terrible.

The full name is "United States of America" thus "America" is an acceptable short-hand. There's really no reason to nit-pick over it except certain people are desperate to make themselves seem smarter.

300 BC - 100 AD

From 50BC to 100AD, Latin was dominant.

Anyway one day English will also be replaced by another language, and it will be greatly accelerated in the near future during the downfall of the US Empire under Emperor Trump the Chosen One, religious zealot and warmonger, during his presidency Mexico will conquer most of the US, and Spanish will be the new dominant language. Ay Tyrion pendejo! Que piensas de este futuro de mierda?

Angry Koala, you are a troll.

And Germany going in and conquering France again is *far far far* more likely than a Mexican invasion.

Mexico was literally never a threat to the US militarily.

Mexico doesn't need to invade the U.S with its military. They can take over through mass immigration.

A troll calling someone a troll: this is being IRRELEVANT!

Germany has no army, or greatly reduced, and anyway Germany and France are kind of "married" you know, you seem to not know it, but France and Germany since the 50s are deeply cooperating not only in terms of diplomacy (we stand always together in international meetings) but also in terms of culture (most of the French and German schools have special class for both French and German known as Franco-German/European classes) and in terms of economics (Germany is our biggest partner), we share the same currency, and hopefully soon the same state (a federal Europe vowed by both nations) and the same army. So again your ignorance about these 2 nations is great.
In the case of Mexico and the US, both countries did not achieve such close diplomatic ties. Mexico isn't a threat militarily speaking, nonetheless we cannot hide the fact that a great part of the US are now largely inhabited by Mexicans or people of Mexican descents, culturally speaking Mexico is a threat (if you consider it as a threat, i would rather consider it as a chance for the US).

I know, I just find it hilarious, when US-Americans confuse the USA with the continent America. They really think they are that relevant.

America can refer to a country or a landweight. I find it hilarious that you insist on calling countries their formal names. You can say Austria/Österreich to refer to the Austrian Republican government, not just the Austrian region (Südtirol, some Hungarian lands), you don't have to always say Republic of Austria/Republik Österreich. Gosh formal sticks these days.

United States of America
or, America for short.

Actually it's even the contrary, Only "Americans" claim that UNited States of America is called "America". In French we call you specifically Etats-Uniens or Ricains, it is more relevant, in Spanish they also call you Estados-Unidenses.

And this is not only Europeans, the Chinese call your nation "Meiguo" whereas the continent is "Meizhou", you see they are differentiated. You are the only ones considering your nation incorporating the whole continent by "America" or "Americans".

Don't speak for, what, 6 thousand million other folk. It's really just some West Europeans that think this. Just since China has 2 words where English has 1 does not mean China call America by official name, it means China is not applicable.

What are we then? United Statists? That sounds terrible.

Heh.

The Chinese call the US differently compared to the continent, "Zhou" 州 refers to the continent, "Guo" 国 to the country, same thing applies for the inhabitants of the country or the continent, you just have to add the particle "ren" 人 to refer to the people: 美国人: Americans (of the country), 美洲人:Americans (of the Continent) hence no mistake. And as far as I know the Chinese are alone 1,4 billion, and many languages copied the Chinese way to define and conceive things (the Japanese, sometimes and previously the Koreans and the Vietnamese also use the Chinese characters, and hence they certainly differentiate them exactly as the Chinese do).
As for Spanish, as it seems you do not know it yet, it is a language spoken in several countries nowadays so this does not only include 'few Europeans', the Portuguese speakers and perhaps the Italian speakers call and differentiate them the same way.
EEUU =/= America, Estados-unidenses =/= Americanos

It's truly strange that the English speakers did not find any relevant term to refer to the people living in the US.
That perhaps comes from the early days of the country, I read somewhere that in the beginning, they planned to extend the US to the whole continent, this could be a reason about why they never bothered about finding a relevant name.
