The reason it is a better triple than others, is because it contains access to so many parts of the board. It can influence South America, Africa, and Asia easily. The only region it leaves open is Russia, which is, in my opinion, the weakest region of the main 3(Southwest, East/Southeast are the other 2). Leaving one region open, even if it is Russia, can still be a risky strategy, but with the extra early income the Boston triple provides, it is definitely a viable strategy.
Like mentioned above, the biggest risk of the Boston triple is potentially losing Antarctica or Australia. Depending on the board setup, losing one of them could be devastating, especially Antarctica. Usually losing Australia means you can still take Indonesia or Antarctica; it will just more contested.
