Save, but not submit orders: 1/22/2016 06:45:10

I'd like to see a way to save my orders without submitting them. Is there a way to do this?

There are several use-cases:

  • I may want to plan most of my moves, but wait for negotiations to finish before I finalize.
  • I want to share my plans with teammates, but not finalize until we finish discussing strategy.
  • On very large maps, I may have hundreds of orders and not have time to plan them all in a single sitting.
  • Sometimes I'll click on Modify Orders to tweak something, then forget to re-submit, thus losing all my hard work.

Most of these are only relevant to multi-day games, but sharing with teammates would be at least as important in real-time games.

Technically, you can share orders with teammates already by just submitting. But, you have to be careful that you don't let the turn progress accidentally.

The client will save your orders if you don't submit, and that's a partial solution. But it doesn't always work, I may want to resume on a different device, and it doesn't help sharing with teammates.

It would also be cool to have a way to see all of my team's orders at once.

I can tell you what Fizzers reply will probably be.

"This is not on my immediate road map"

And then it will be 5 years before we see it.

(Should have said, it is a good idea which should be implemented asap imo )

Really like this idea, although I've never thought of it before.

I think the easiest way to implement this would be to add an extra phase before the submit, called 'save orders', like you said. This phase should probably do everything that the submit orders does now, except move the turn on. When viewing the games from the dashboard, the game should still be listed as your turn so that the game isn't forgotten, but overall I think it would work.

Like the opening poster, I also thought of it. :D

So, of course it's an awesome idea. :D

And just to verify that everyone here is on the same page,

I think that Warlight should still regard our orders as unconfirmed for purposes of booting. :)

I often save and restore orders cross-device :P

Can you guys not do this already?

btw, does anyone know where this data is stored locally? I had a hard time finding it, I think it might be encrypted.

I have flash storage turned off, so I lose my orders when I leave the page.

This is a feature that I would definitely use (especially for team games).

Master Jz, thanks for the input, I figured it was probably in there but I can't find it, that defo confirms it. I reckon either it's encrypted, or just coded in a way I don't expect, I'll have to find another approach...

I can't do this unless I copy the local flash data for the game...

and for many people, storing browser history is not a good idea,
either because the browser doesn't play well with weeks or months
of history/cookies stored,

or because the computer(s) are shared,
either with family / roommates or with the public.

If the game had a method to write the orders to a text file,
like a chess game shorthand code,
it wouldn't need to use my hard drive to store my orders, or my potential orders,
because the text file would be so small. :)
