Why are there so many Europe maps?

I mean, I know you can do tons of history scenarios, but you could do that with Asia. I'd think it would be pretty cool to do some historical Asia maps. Or Africa. Or anywhere really....

I'm willing to bet at least 10% of Warlight maps are of Europe

I think it has something to do with Europe maps being more asthetically pleasing. At least I myself find most Europe maps look good where as a lot of Asia map shapes I really don't like and therefore avoid most of them.

I think it's that there are so few maps of Asia and so more maps of Europe, the map population of Europe (and good Europe) is more than Asia (and good Asia).

My Thoughts:
Europe is continent(Western Bias), and as such we just sort of make maps of our favorite Continent

More people in Europe have access to computers and can play this game than those in Asia(as Japan+South Korea+some other parts of Asia < Europe population wise)

This is a game in English and therefore we Follow western Bias

More Europeans and those of European descent play this game than those of Asian descent, and as such make more Europe maps

There are way more Asian internet users than European ones.

There are far more players from Europe, that might be a factor.

If so, why aren't there a ton of maps of America or the USA?

I think Europe with it's internal seas, large panisulas and some big islands (England, Ireland + eventually Island) has much more interesting shape than America (although the coast of Canada may help here a bit). What about asia- certainly there are much more internet users there but perhaps this proportions do not extend to Warlight, therefore Asia may be underepresented in our game.

eventually, the reason could be that Amercians are not best on geography:

I'd like to offer a mapmakers perspective on this. I noticed the exact same thing, that 5 out of the top 25 highest rated maps were big giant europe maps, so I decided that I was gonna make myself a big giant europe map. And 2 months later it's my most successful map, and in fact my only one that manages to achieve a consistent rating that's not four-point-nothing.

I guess people get bored playing on a bunch of squares...

I was actually thinking about this yesterday, I was thinking about making a Europe map based on geological features to give us something different to play on, and then it hit me, why not make a geographical map of USA? There are a lot of interesting geological features in America, but not many of them are represented on most maps which are based on the "states" which for most part are really arbitrary squares...

If anyone would like to help or is interested in testing (I've yet to make a map!) then PM me :)

I like this idea in general, not just for the US. I guess it would be useful to start from a relief map of whatever region in question. Wikipedia gave this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrain_cartography for general theory on relief/terrain mapping, which might also be useful background information to help in the search for such maps.

Some other -- perhaps better -- links: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topographic_map, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contour_line

Err hate to break this to you but there are not many states that are squares. Maybe a tenth.

That still makes 5...

Relief is an idea, but I was thinking more about features, such as rivers, mountains and deserts that form natural borders, like a lot of European countries have. I know that some states for example follow the Mississipi river, but from a European's perspective honestly it's boring. I think designing a map without the states in mind would be really intersting to a non-American especially. We could easily make it a "What if America was colonised 1000 years ago" or "Colonise America" (could be really intersting to recreate the Gold Rush, for example) or even "Create your own state" like we have "create your own nation" on Europe maps.

Basically, imagine a european map, but using the geography of America :)

Something along these lines:

1. English is a fairly widely spoken language in North America and Europe, certainly more so than Asia (not counting India, which I'll talk about later). As Warlight is in English, it naturally has a much wider appeal in North America and Europe than Asia.

2. In Western culture (the primary source of Warlight players, I think) the history of Europe is far better known than Asian history or pre-colonial New World history. This leads to many more "scenario" maps of Europe.

3. Troll's Europe is a very old and popular map, but looks pretty ugly up close. There is no equivalent for any other region as far as I know. This leads to mapmakers seeing it and trying to create better-looking maps that capture the same player base as Troll's Europe.

4. Europe has been home to well known wars that feature opponents with similar size geographically and many smaller participants. This lends itself extremely well to diplos/rp games, increasing the demand for Europe maps.

5. The most populated countries in every region of the world (except the China/Japan/Koreas region) were almost all European colonies at some time or another. This means that people all over the world at least vaguely know European history.
