I'm British, but spend a lot of time talking to American's online, so I've got used to seeing it spelt both ways. Since I'm now older and have gotten over my hang-ups and can view it more objectively, I would say that though "colour" looks odd I think it's a prettier word. But "color" is shorter and conveys the same meaning. But then, so does "thru" so maybe we should officially change that while we're at it too?

That's about it really, I don't know which word will "win" in the end, but I was surprised that more countries seem to be officially picking up the "colour" spelling (places like Canada and Australia) so maybe that will win out. America won't even modernise its measurement system, so I doubt they'll ever recognise it no matter what happens :P

I find it really interesting that words such "mirror" or "error" used to be spelt "mirrour" and "errour" but we (UK) actually dropped the "u"

Who knows? Only time will tell!

EDIT: This article is fascinating if you want to read up about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_and_British_English_spelling_differences

What's worst is them telling you you've spelled Colo(u)r wrong.

True, we should all just accept there are 2 ways to spell it, I'll never understand why so many people are grammar Nazis. Language is fluid and we are at a time in history where it really has an opportunity to be changed on a global scale, a lot of people seem to be afraid of that though.

So long as it conveys the correct meaning then it fulfills it's job as a word. The way I see it, if you're able to correct someone, then you understood them, therefore, what they wrote was adequate for the task.

I mean, for heaven's sake this is the internet, not a fricken scientific paper...

322,583,006 is the population of the USA (color), while the other English as a first language countries have a population of 180,335,012 (colour). So the sample space of people who are most likely to use "colour" is just under twice that of those who are likely to use "color".

Note these are approximate estimates based on http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ and the countries I believe say either one.
