So he takes the position that society tries to condition him to be racist, then he tries to stick to the game whilst you harass him?

I honestly don't know. I'm from an area that's commonly stereotyped as being racist and yet most of my life it's been drilled into me that racism is bad. Also, I can count on my fingers the number of legitimate racists I've met in real life.

well i heard lots of "im not racist, but..." and "slave owners usually treated their slaves good" and "i wonder how that black guy could afford that car?" and "lock your doors when you drive through this neighborhood" and "the mexicans are taking all our jobs" etc. not to mention all the blatant n words and obvious racism.

when you're a kid and you hear it from adults, it is very conditioning.

also when you hear on the news a person's race being used to describe the person, especially when it involves crime, it can have a big effect.

and when you've rarely ever had a black supervisor or teacher or police officer, but you've seen plenty of black people sweeping a floor or hanging out at the park or using food stamps.

im not trying to make a statement of blame here, whether or not it's intentional the conditioning is still there. i try not to be too judgmental about "white privilege" in others, but i do make a conscious effort to check my own.

I doubt, that you want to discuss the terms of racism, than rather be insulted to justify your thread headline.

Sorry Ranek, I wish I could be as good behaving as you would like me too.

I am so sorry about the tittle.. I should've known you would've been annoyed about my awful standards of behaviour... I am sorry. I wish I could just be more polite and more constructive like you... May you teach me your ways???

I think it's safe to say I am fast becoming the most disliked player on Warlight.

well i heard lots of "im not racist, but..." and "slave owners usually treated their slaves good" and "i wonder how that black guy could afford that car?" and "lock your doors when you drive through this neighborhood" and "the mexicans are taking all our jobs" etc

Quote number 3 is the only one that's blatantly racist. Quote 2 just shows an ignorance of history. Meanwhile quotes 4 and 5 are not racist at all. If there's a neighborhood that has a high rate of crime there isn't anything racist about being cautious when going through there. I don't care if it's a white neighborhood or a black one, if there's consist car-jacking going on in the area I'm going to be on my toes. (But honestly one should lock their car doors just about anywhere, criminals don't have a jurisdiction.)

I also don't see how "Mexicans are taking our jobs" is racist. For one, there's a bit truth to it. The occurrence of shady employers hiring illegal immigrants for horribly low wages is more common than most people think. Although most of the blame still goes to the employer for taking advantage of desperate people. My point is, the job market right now isn't the best in the world, so it's understandable that there's a bit of negativity regarding immigrant workers when there isn't even enough jobs for locals.

In my personal opinion the term racism gets thrown around too casually anymore. Ironically America's intense focus on racism has actually helped to keep it alive. The media does everything it can to emphasize the differences between different races and make it look like we have a war of one race versus another going on.

like i said, im not talking about whether it's intentional or not, it does create a bias based on race for an impressionable child.

my grandma had us lock the doors when driving thru certain neighborhoods. yes im sure it was about crime, but i was 6 yrs old and all i saw was black people out the window. of course that made an impression.

and i heard plenty of complaints about the amount of mexicans working at the factories in my home town. what i didn't hear was the fact that a white person was still more likely to get the job and the mexicans were only taking away opportunities from obvious drunks and felons. when i was old enough for critical thinking i realized this was coded message for "minorities dont even have as much worth as the worst white employees".

and the vast majority of immigrants holding real jobs are legal and allowed to work in the US. the ones that are illegal are either lying to an oblivious employer or doing work that a legal person would refuse to do.

quote 4 is definitely racist. if you don't think so you have your head in the sand. ive heard that one a lot and it implies that someone is suprised a black person can earn good money or be responsible or that the only way a black person can afford it is by commiting crimes.

obvious racism is nowhere near as dangerous as subtle racism.

people with good intentions for keeping racism a topic have a good reason. we are still fighting unconscious prejudices that affect minorities unfairly. maybe we'll never get rid of these prejudices but it isnt a futile effort.

people do need to de-emphasize blame though. it isn't about shaming or ostracizing people, but challenging them to be as good to others as they can be.

As a general rule:
When white people talk about racism, they think about the KKK and racial slurs. That kind of racism still exists, but isn't widespread.
When black people talk about racism, they also think about racial bias. This kind of racism is very widespread.

Most people are racially biased to some extent, and prone to act on that racial bias (to the detriment of minorities) without realizing it. When people realize they are biased due to cultural factors/stereotypes (like the person in your game), they become more fair in the way they treat minorities.

I think there's a misunderstanding. With Quote 4 I was referring to the "Lock your doors when going through this neighborhood." The quote you're referring to regarding a black guy having a nice car, was the one where I agreed with you was racist.
