− | + | The WarLight wiki came under a bit of attack by spambots recetly. Based on the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam combating spam] page, I first tried to import their list of 170,000 banned IPs. While this presumably worked at stopping the spambots, it also degraded the performance of the wiki to an unacceptable level, even with APC caching enabled. Therefore, I took these IP bans out.

+ | Instead, the wiki now uses a simple CAPTCHA for unauthenticated edits and account creation. It's an easily broken CAPTCHA, but we'll see how many of the spambots have code for it and increase CAPTCHA strength later if needed.

+ | :Yeah, the list of 170k IPs isn't very performance-friendly, have you tried the DNS blacklist (as described on the page you mentioned)? --[[User:Grzechooo|Grzechooo]] 14:20, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
+ | :BTW. suggestion: disable creation of pages by IPs, something like this in LocalSettings.php: <code>$wgGroupPermissions['*']['createpage'] = false;</code> should do. --[[User:Grzechooo|Grzechooo]] 14:23, 16 September 2011 (UTC) |
