February 2014: As a result of the Euromaidan and escape of the pro-Russian president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, Crimean peninsula is captured by masked Russian troops. A month later gains independence and pro-Russian government. At the same time, anti-government separatists from Donbass region advocates for secession or even joining Russia. | 12th April 2014: unmarked pro-Russian militants seize the Donetsk city in Donbass. Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic are formed. Russian government considers the peninsula and Donbass as part of their country, deciding to aid the self-proclaimed states and annex Crimea. | February 2015: After months of clashes and incidents, the Minsk treaties enters into force to end the war. This however fails and the conflict goes on for the next years. | March 2021: Russia starts to locate their forces next to Ukraine. By the end of the year, 3/4 of the army will be located near the borders. President Vladimir Putin threatens the country of the pretext of discrimination against the Russian population, while the international community expresses its fear of increasing tensions between the states. | 21th February 2022: The Russian president recognizes the independence of the secessionist republics. Putin questions the independence of Ukraine, recognizing the entire country as historical territory belonging to Russia and scaring with serious consequences. The West is responding with heavy sanctions and strengthening NATO's eastern flank, fearng the escalation. The people of Ukraine feel they live on the brink of war. | 24th February 2022: At 4 AM, a sudden Russian invasion begins from Crimea, Donbass, allied Belarus and Russia itself, breaking the Minsk II agreement. The rogue state of Transnistria mobilizes troops in support of Russia. In Ukraine under martial law, the armed forces are put into action to fiercely defend the homeland. Civilians around the world are protesting against the conflict for fear of escalating to World War 3. The undeclared war begins... |
