11 May - 4th June 1944, Monte Cassino - Italy, Polish II Corps Operation Diadem. The fourth attempt to capture the ancient Benedictine monastery on the rocky hill of Monte Cassino. Next to Stalingrad, Kursk and the Normandy landings,battles of Monte Cassino were one of the bloodiest of the Second World War. One of the soldiers who took part there was my great grandfather. He was supplying people with ammunition and transporting the wounded on the Unniversal Carrier. Unfortunately, this episode ended tragically for him. He suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which he treated with alcohol, and when drunk he could beat his relatives while having anger control problem. Adding to this the harassment of soldiers fighting in the west by the Polish communist authorities, it shows the image of a man whose life has been turned into a nightmare. These are not jokes. This is not a jest. This is serious. |
