Parte I - Revolução Pernambucana

Chapter III-Precedants of independence
Part I-Pernambucana revolution

In Pernambuco, many residents were angry with the growing increase in taxes, which served to sustain the luxury of the Portuguese court installed in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, other problems affected the inhabitants of the region: The great drought of 1816 caused serious damage to agriculture and caused hunger in the northeast. The prices of sugar and cotton (main products cultivated in Pernambuco) were falling in the international market. All this served to start a revolt against the government of D. João VI, which became known as the Pernambuco Revolution, which had as its objective to form a republic that would be inspired by the French Revolution.
