Here's a comparison for you with some official statistics from England and Wales: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/police-use-of-firearms-statistics-england-and-wales-financial-year-ending-31-march-2014-data-tables

Specifically look at table 4. The number of times the police actually fired a bullet per per year in England in Wales is in single figures. Now, someone's going to come here and say the populations are different. The combined population of England and Wales is 54M, the population of the USA is 319M. That's only 5.9 times more people in the USA than in England and Wales.

So therefore, the 2 times the police in England and Wales shot a bullet between April 2013 and March 2014 scales up to 11.8. Do you honestly think American police fire less than 11.8 bullets per year?

Why would you compare a country with extremely strict gun laws to one with extremely lax gun laws? Pretty ridiculous to even try to make such a comparison.

Perhaps US should have stricter gun laws. Maybe that would work.

Almost no bobbies carry guns. How can they fire guns if they don't have them?

That said, I don't dispute your main thesis.

Bobbies generally don't although compared to pre 9/11 and 7/7 we have seen a slight increase but we do have AFOs in situations where firearms may be required.

Clement makes a very valid point.

Firstly, I agree that US cops are too trigger-happy. I think that is largely due to what I said though. If only a subset of police officers have guns, it's more likely that they will be better trained in how to use them (or not use them). The main reason American cops fire their weapons so often is that most of them don't know how to de-escalate tense situations.

Another reason the American cops are so trigger happy is because a good amount of the population are criminal, drug dealing thugs. There is no doubt in my mind that half the "victims" were involved with drugs. And New Zealand also has less Urban areas than America. Please compare Germany and America for that seems like a good match up.

I am aware police in the United States shoot WAY too many people, and use WAY too much excessive force, bland what you need is to prosecute those guys, no hesitation.

I don't think it's going to change. It could change if the US citizens respect the police. That way we make reforms to the police force and see results at the same time.

We have a good handful of bad cops, and a population that says "fuck the police." Both need to change before we can see results.

Maybe the government should stop enabling the drug trade, stop selling weapons to drug dealers and start respecting it's own laws.

This is just the negative side of having relaxed gun laws. As we say, better more freedom than security, because if you try to get both you lose both and deserve neither.

I'd rather have the security of knowing that my country's citizens aren't allowed to go and buy guns to privately own. I just don't like the idea of them getting into the wrong hands.

I'd rather have criminals, civilians and the government with weapons then just the government. Something about a government that trades drugs across two continents, invades countries for bogus reasons, and has shown signs of corruption being the only group in a nation with guns just rubs me wrong.

i think we could have smarter gun laws. people that support gun rights don't want more hurdles, but, as conservatives like to say, freedom isn't free.
