William III had been scheming with the anti-James officials for years, and did land with 21.000 troops in London and only became king (and not just a regent) because of the high-level game of diplomacy he played for years, threatening to leave with his army (and thus spark civil war), if they did not give him what he wanted. He had a lot of luck, but I would call that a very smart take-over.
