Martian, We are arming Isis, our foreign policy in the middle east is basically this: Keep all the Arabic countries off balance and weak. The English and the USA have both been doing just that for 100 or more years, Lybia and Egypt were overthrown by rebels we armed who have ties to Al-Quada (spelling not my long suit, sorry), We are still arming the rebels, hell we armed the group who attacked on 9-11. too much is kept quiet under national security umbrella , and those who say it could not be kept secret , someone would talk are right!!!! People have talked; been fired , been assassinated in the media or quietly assassinated for real; few are listening, no one wants to admit how bad it has become. So yes get our troops out of other countries, stop sending arms to others, stop investing in countries who don't practice democracy . that would help a lot.

Voting is incredibly important. You cannot change a nation without votes (aside from civil war [which still requires votes to begin]). Lets say you do vote, whats the next problem? Being informed. When each election rolls around, almost every party will post their agenda on their respective website. Just 10 mins skimming over each agenda can show you how different each party will operate. I once did a report on the Republican and Democrat agendas during the 2012 elections. It was very easy to tell what each party believed and how they prioritized the topic.

Then after you're informed, then you use your power as a citizen to vote. You push people who hurt the nation out of office. After that then the slow process of reform begins. From here you, the citizen, are in a position to watch to see how well your elected leaders operate. You can see if your leaders will keep the promises they made during their campaign. If they break all or most of the promises they made then obviously that means they dont really care. They shouldn't be in office. Staying informed takes an hour for every 4 years. Its not very hard but its very important.

But hey, thats just my thought.

^it's better to be informed first, then vote.

We should do as rome did. Have 2 presidents and only 1 year terms. That way they have a competitor and are both pushed to do great thing quickly.

I think that the United States as a world power needs help, and well it helps, although there since the rise of Obama foreign policy was really lagging, I'm beginning to think he was trying to dismantle states or sell them all in the Middle East Iranians,,,, it is not really clear, now has war in Yemen, and it supports making an agreement with the Iranians, to arm the terrorist do Shi'ite rebels in Yemen, but supports Sunni Arab countries bombed in Yemen Shiites, I'm starting to think they incite countries to sell weapons,,,,,

Eclipse, I fully agree with your sentiments. Anyone can point out problems, but that isn't useful unless there is a solution being worked towards. Thank you for making this thread.

I also agree with you on your politics sections, for sure. shyb hit the nail on the head, corporations (the "1%") control the elections with all the money they dump. Our hope is that they decide who gets in the running and who wins, but it is much worse than that. Big money isn't donated, it is being sold. They give loads of money to both candidates before the election, and when either wins they get their return. The elected official now does what the money tells him/her to do. That's why politicians are known for their empty promises, and that's why people don't vote. If somehow the messages of 3rd parties were heard, this same thing would soon happen to them.

So how do we fix this?

One possible solution is to outlaw political donations. Any candidate known to have accepted a donation or used his/her own money to help him/her win the election would immediately forfeit the election. Dispersal of positive and negative political messages would not be allowed. All candidates would be given equal air time in debates, equal air time monologuing alone in front of a camera, each candidate's website would be set up by the same government committee.

I like this solution, but "Big Money" wouldn't and I'm sure they would tell people the constitution is against it.

hankypinky, that is a good solution, but it only really adresses one part of the problem. another way politicians are bought is by giving them jobs and speaking fees after they retire from politics. it is fairly common, and if money is no longer allowed to corrupt in an election, more of it will be waiting for the politicians when they leave office.

the more i dwell on issues like this, the more socialism looks attractive. you can't stop obscenely rich people from buying people off, but you can stop someone from becoming obscenely rich.

I think inheritance should be a key focus on fixing the wealth gap.

A few systems I've thought of while reading could probably work.

Anyway, a system in which one works for the wealth, never being granted a grain unless he worked for it, would be the goal of capitalism. So naturally, we should try to divide up the deceased rich's deaths to the general public, leaving a small percentage to the natural inheritors out of respect. Would keep down big businesses by making those companies' wealth constantly shifting to smaller ones. Not sure if something like this is already in use?

As an outsider, there's 2 things I find odd about the USA's politics. Such as, why do you judge your leaders on how patriotic they are? or what religion they are? Why does that stuff matter? It just seems a bit silly.
