@Ryiro: When I was in {rp} and we played serious diplos there's a couple components that makes a 'pro' player of that gametype. These aren't really in any order:

1. Ability to roleplay. This makes the game more enjoyable if everyone is acting out their part. Some don't even look to win, just to make it interesting and funny. Regardless, the winners generally roleplayed very well.

2. Politics. Knowing who to ally, who to war, who to betray, all while seeming the least threatening. I'm pretty bad at the last part.

3. Warlight/tactical ability. This matters more when up against an opponent who's on equal grounds, but it's pretty self-explanatory. The better you are at outplaying people, the larger income difference you can overcome in an opponent.

{rp} made most of the templates that are played in open games today, and I'd have to say none of the open games reflect on how the template is actually played between good players. I used to be very frustrated about all of this, people claiming to be great at a template they don't even understand. It's even more frustrating when you have a clan that claims to play it well, and then when you sit down and try to play the template with their members, they're just immature children doing things blindly.

I guess if rigged large FFAs that depend highly on luck suit your fancy, open game diplomacy is right up your alley.

Diplomacy isn't about winning per se. It's about having fun.

It helps when the rules aren't always the same, or the map and factions are carved out very uniquely.

I.e. just by splitting an overused map like 2014 world nations in an innovative manner, you create a completely different game that offers new and perhaps improved strategy.

I think that's what the Russian USSR guy tried to say.

And I completely agree. Diplos aren't for winning but for having fun playing.

some people like some things, some people like others.

i used to play a lot of diplos but the bickering was just too much, so now i really only play them with my clan (still bickering). i never try to win like you would a regular ffa. it's not fun to me to play like that. i like to help others out of a gangbang, or against a PE, start crazy world wars, or just challenge someone with a bigger income. then when the game seems done (everyone left is being nice to each other) we usually vote to end.

no it doesn't take much skill (maybe a little social skill), but it's fun for some people. that's all. no need to try to make it second class. just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

and if a diplo player gets uppity and thinks they are smarter than you go ahead and teach them a lesson in a 1v1 game (maybe they'll get into it and play more strategic games).
